barn find engine advice

So my progress so far has been sparse but hit a major achievement with the carbs.after a pineapple and lemon juice hot water bath I got my slides unstuck, pulled out and cleaned.guitar wire for the ports and im rockin. My favorite new trick of the day is an oral b vibrating tooth brush sure helped get in those nooks and crannies. Ultra sonic mobile style. Any whoo its time to address the engine. Recap I have a 1977 cb 750f with 16000 original km.everything factory all wiring pristine. So my question to the masses today is ...Without removing the engine what should be done to help with the first firing since 1989. Should I lube anything or spray some magic potion in there to help with running? Or just fire the carbs on and turn it over. Of course ill change the oil first and run fuel from a secondary tank till i can clean the original properly.

I'd pull the plugs, spray some penetrating oil into the cylinders, and kick start it several times to turn the engine over. Then I'd repeat this with the electric start if the prior effort went smoothly.

If you feel good, replace plugs and give it a go. If you do run it, run it until it gets warm then shut it down and check for leaks or smoking.

And take a photo of the smile on your face to remind yourself in the days to come of how it all felt that special day!

I had one that sat for 25 years.  In addition to the previous post when you change the oil save a quart and put it into a squeeze bottle.  Remove the tappet covers and squirt it in there to get some lube top to the top end.  Leave the plugs out at first and kick it over with the kickstarter  a dozen times or more.  Plugs back in and fire it up, it may smoke a bit for a few days as sometimes the rings have to reset themselves.

+1 on this, get those tapets well lubed up.

I'd also get a pan gasket and pull the pan for #$%*s and giggles, just to see what's down there and avoid any surprises.

And of course you will need to go through the brakes thoroughly before a ride, lube the swingarm, change fork oil.

Unscrew the tapper covers (8) and squirt engine oil or Marvel on them. A few drops or a splash is enough. Just turn the engine over with kick starter several times without actually firing it. May have to remove plugs to make it easier if it's being obstinate.

Also, be careful removing the plugs, some penetrating oil and not too much force to remove the plugs. You don't need a broken off plug... If you reinstall the plugs, a bit of anti-seize on the threads to coat them will pay dividends later too. Just use the grey color.

His suggestion was to just use some of the oil that you were using for your fresh oil change and put some into the top of the engine through the round tappet covers. Would be a good idea to check those clearances and give it a good static timing before its first start, basically a 3,000 mile check up.  Your airbox is already off or clean which is good, have had them full of mice debri,  but don't be surprised when it fires if some interesting things shoot out the exhaust pipe. I have had nuts, seeds, mouse nests all kinds of fun stuff. Make sure its not too clogged.
  If it starts don't let it idle too low, keep it up a tad to keep the oil moving well. If the clutch does not work right off don't freak out as it may need some fresh oil and a good warm up to break loose. Sometimes I tie the handle back with a rope for awhile.
  And please if my suggestions don't work don't send out the Boyz to break my kneecap if you are part of the Mafia    ;D  ;D

Wow, I really like your Oral-B idea...  maybe modified head as well, with various wetordry grits, for cleaning carbon off pistons/cylinders and combustion chambers. Unlimited uses for this!

only think I can add is some kroil in the cylinders can never ever hurt.  Then kick start a few times
