Electronic Speedometer
« on: November 09, 2013, 04:01:31 PM »
I have searched the board for hours now with no luck. I feel incredibly ignorant because I don't think this should be so difficult to locate but it seems to be for me.

I am looking for an electronic speedometer with magnetic pickup for the speed sensor. Odometer, trip meter, and included idiot lights if possible.
This gauge from Dime City would be perfect IF it was electronic. http://www.dimecitycycles.com/vintage-cafe-racer-caferacer-bobber-brat-chopper-custom-motorcycle-electronic-parts-mini-black-speedo-kilometer-speedometer-15-0020b.html

I am running a complete GSXR front end so the stock mechanical speedo pick up is not an option.
If i cannot locate a speedo with the included idiot lights then I will end up using something like this http://www.dimecitycycles.com/vintage-cafe-racer-caferacer-bobber-brat-chopper-custom-motorcycle-electronic-parts-mini-stainless-steel-black-face-electronic-mph-kph-speedo-speedometer-60-1632.html. I'll then just run some new LEDs for the idiot lights and mount them within the headlight housing. I'd rather have it all included in one setup though.

I run a Trailtech Vapor unit. Speedo, tach, odo, trip, temp, etc. Also has programmable warning lights. I believe they also sell idiot lights.

I am running a Veypor VR2. Great device for everything you need. Idiot lights could be LED's on a panel you build. I have done this and it's not to hard to do. The Veypor is also a on board Dyno if you are interested in tuning to get the max out of your ride. Here is a link for more information if you are interested http://www.veypor.com/vr2.html

I see GPS senders are coming down from the $200 mark on ebay. I might try this with a tiny digital speedometer/odometer from SPA or motogadget  if I ever finish this bike, and let just the factory tach be the one main centered gauge.  The GPS senders require room for a lump a little bigger than a zippo, not bad if one has a fairing. I wonder if the sender cable can be shortened. They seem to come in 4'+ lengths.

Check out the acewell 2853

Acewell 2853 was my first choice until I saw how clunky the tach responded. Also the led backlight is way too bright at night with zero adjustment. I might just be a little picky though. Id like to have a needle speedo / needle tach. Im ok with two < 3" diameter gauges

;D
These are the guages I used.  There is a link in my signature to how I fitted them.  I adapted a speed sensor from a VFR750 to mine but if I did it again I would spend the extra couple of dollars and go the GPS option ;D

What is the difference between the speedhut gauges http://www.speedhut.com/gauge/GR4-DUALGPS-ST-01/1/Dual-Gauge---120mph-GPS-Speedometer---8K-Tachometer and these legendary gauges http://www.dimecitycycles.com/vintage-cafe-racer-caferacer-bobber-brat-chopper-custom-motorcycle-electronic-parts-legendary-motorcycles-gps-electronic-speedometer-speedo-tachometer-tacho-sm2803.html?

They both seem nice and in theory sound amazing but the button on the face doesn't seem ideal for wet weather and they are clearly originally designed for in car dashboard setups. It doesn't seem ideal to risk ruining a $400 because it is "kind of" waterproof.

I am still searching for something like this http://www.dimecitycycles.com/vintage-cafe-racer-caferacer-bobber-brat-chopper-custom-motorcycle-electronic-parts-mini-black-face-led-speedo-speedometer-25-7032b.html but with an electronic magnetic speed pick up or even GPS. I don't really need a combined tachometer. I am fine with two separate gauges that are small.

I've also found these gauges http://daytona-global.com/products/?page=Products_AllProducts&mfrID=9&categID=14&subcategID=49]http://daytona-global.com/products/?page=Products_AllProducts&mfrID=9&categID=14&subcategID=49]http://daytona-global.com/products/?page=Products_AllProducts&mfrID=9&categID=14&subcategID=49which is what I will most likely go with if i don't find my original gauge choice that i had in mind. Dimecity sells one variation of their speedo http://www.dimecitycycles.com/vintage-cafe-racer-caferacer-bobber-brat-chopper-custom-motorcycle-electronic-parts-mini-stainless-steel-black-face-electronic-mph-kph-speedo-speedometer-60-1632.html.

I've ridden in all sorts of weather with mine right up to teeming rain where it was bucketing down and even sneaking through my wet weather gear and never had an issue.  The biggest difference with the speedhut gauges to any other you can buy that I have seen is they are fully customisable if they don't have it listed just ask most of the time it isn't an issue ;D.

Sometimes what you are looking for is directly in front of you.

I had no idea Acewell made this gauge. Now I just need to find a distributor in America.

Thanks!

Now I need to decide if I want to spend more money on a gauge than I probably will on an engine rebuild.
