Had to put down my girl yesterday, the arthritis was so bad she was not able to walk anymore. Was 'bout the hardest thing I've ever had to do.
Bought her for my daughter, was a great dog, here she is as a young pup....

Many things have changed over the years. When I was growing up in a rual area, a dog was well, just a dog, we had many over the years. Fast forward to today and it's changed, a dog is now part of the family. I'd like to think we have improved with our relationships with dogs.

Years ago we had to put our black lab down due to cancer. Our boys were in grade school at the time and I would always meet them with their cheerful smiling faces at the bus stop as I would come home from work each morning. The day that we had her put down was different because my wife had told our boys what was going on so they knew that morning was the last time they would see the dog they grew up with, there isn't a best time or easy way to tell your kids that. When I met them at the bus stop as I was coming home from work I could see their sad faces so I asked what was wrong (I didn't know my wife had informed them) and they immediately burst into tears. That more than anything else absolutely broke my heart.

We've got a dachshund now that's getting up in years, never ever did I ever think I'd have a lap dog but this pip squeak of a dog has claimed a spot on our hearts as well and it will no doubt be a sad day when her day comes too. I'm not looking forward to it so hopefully that day can wait a few more years.

Oh dachshunds are something, we had one when I was a kid.  They have big hearts and are as stubborn as they come.

When we bought our place I found an ad for aussie puppies.  So we picked one named Max, brown little guy, with blue eyes, to look back in the car was blinding, all my kids have blue eyes and this piece of work had the same shade of blue too.

Anyway, there was a cat that came with the house and Max went after it - through the fence and got hit by a car. He was 6 weeks old  :(

So we found an Airedale breeder in the woods near Richmond, he had 7 month old boy that he was ready to sell.  Poor guy was in a cage with dirt floor, filthy but very friendly.  We took him home, called him Buster Brown and he set in the corner for 2 days and I had to carry him outside because he was afraid of everything.  Seems like the breeder neglected him to some extent - like walking him.

But after washing him and few days he started to trust us and he showed a great deal of personality and he was just the funniest dog you could have.  He was 13 month old when we felt he has some health problems, well the vet opened him up and let him sleep - his liver was double the size from the cancer growth.

So we lost two dogs in a span of  6 month and decided to always have more than one just to have some overlap there.  Now we have 12 year old airedale, 13 years old great pyrenneese and black lab that is 5 - all rescues, but the two old ones are really going down the hill fast now.

I posted this topic at the first of the week because we had just lost the Black Lab that my son had become so attached to and I just wanted to tell someone. Now that he's gone I realize just how much he had meant to me and my wife also.

Never thought this topic would get the attention it has and the true heart felt emotion and feelings it has generated from everyone and the pets (family members) they have lost also.

Thanks for sharing everyone.

Seems this has become the unofficial "Loss of Pet Grieving Club" as you are not alone, DHall.
These beloved pets become family and when gone are sorely missed.
