Fast forward to October this year and the tank was completed (and gorgeous).  It is fitted with a vented Monza cap and a Pingel petcock.  It fits snugly, and clears the forks, trees and clip-ons perfectly.  Here are some pictures Denis took prior to shipping it out to me:

Since I sprang for an aluminum tank, it would seem fitting to source an aluminum seat, as well.  I was really pleased with Ian Halcott's (Twinline founder and http://caferacerseatandtank.com/) fine work on my K7 seat that I called him to fabricate a new aluminum seat for this project.  I am also thinking about having him fabricate an oil tank in a fender to replace the stock oil tank and open up the triangle underneath the seat.  For those of you in the market for a metal seat, I encourage you to contact Ian.  Not only is he a cool guy with great ideas, he also does a first rate job (and relatively quickly too).  I'm hoping to have the seat complete when he gets back from vacation at the beginning of the year so mock-up can be finished.

Thanks, Bill.  Whereas my K7 is more show, this K2 build is all go.  The emphasis is for the bike to have enough performance (handling, power and braking) to spare.  The engine should produce somewhere above 80 bhp.

I think that the aluminum tank and seat will be the jewel or highlight of the bike, since they are one-off and unique from production pieces out there, but my inclination is to give the aluminum a uniform brushed finished, with maybe a off-side black racing stripe and some sort of clear coat (maybe satin).

Okay, for all of you too young to know where the term "bionic" comes from, here's the cultural reference:

http://youtu.be/HoLs0V8T5AA

"Gentlemen, we can rebuild him, we have the technology. . . . Better, stronger, faster!"

Of course, this build is NOT going to run $6M!

if you want a uniform finish, simply use ScotchBrite pads on a sanding block. Work in slow, methodical long strokes all in the same direction. You can't re-start a sanding path from the middle of a line... Takes a bit of practice, but makes a great "brushed" finish in the end.

Another trick bit I am looking to include into this build is an oil tank/fender to replace the stock oil tank reservoir.  The tank/fender will mount in place of the inner fender and allow the triangle under the seat to remain open.

Ian Halcott (http://caferacerseatandtank.com/) sent me some pictures of one he previously made:

I just picked out the color for the powdercoating on the engine cases.  I'm going with a darker/medium gray cast aluminum color for the cases and valve cover, with the cylinders and head to be painted black, and black billett Joker covers for the alternator, clutch, points, starter, and tappets.

I'm leaning toward using a single bold racing stripe (or a bold combined with a thin stripe) offset on the tank and seat -- to be overlayed on the brushed finish -- and then clear coated.  Waiting for the aluminum seat and oil tank to finish mock up.

Just got these robust billet engine mounts from Frank aka 754 for the build.  Bike porn!!  THANKS, FRANK!!  Awesome work.  He made some similar mounts for Dave Hiller aka Doctor D for his CB750F:

I stopped by the CMR shop in the fall and Denis showed me what the plan for your tank was. I didn't realize it was for someone here, it looks great. Denis & Byron did some fine frame work for me, plus built a tank as well.

You mentioned swingarms, they built one for me last year and it's very tidy piece. Tell him I sent you back!!

If you don't mind me asking, how much for the arm Brent..?

It was under eight bills Cdn including tapered rollers and both axles, a year ago.

Here's my stock frame upgrade compared to the stocker. I wanted the entire pressed steel backbone/headstock replaced, plus increased rake. They're good at their jobs, great craftmanship and are very thorough. Denis builds & ships race frames around the world, many to Aus. Mick.

Sorry to drift off topic.

If you're interested, I have an aluminum seat that I won't be using. Changed the style/look that I am doing for my build.

Brent,

The frame looks great -- much more rigid than a stock 550's pressed backbone.  The bracing and gusseting on the frame is first-rate.  I wish I had that kind of extra budget for a CMR swingarm.  What a stellar piece of hardware.  I think I'll have to make due with my Dresda knock-off replica.

As soon as I get the aluminum seat from Ian Halcott, the mock-up can be completed.  I need to determine what length shocks to use in connection with the CBR600RR forks to achieve the best handling.

As stated above, I am leaning heavily in favor of Morris-style 18" wheels front and rear, with a disc conversion to the rear.  I might even consider going to 17" wheels to have a full range of sport tire rubber available.

One of the challenges is that the CBR600RR front brake calipers do not appear to have sufficient clearance for spokes.

Even if I remove some material from the monoblock calipers (on the inside), I still believe there will be clearance problems for the spokes.  I'm looking into having Morris-style wheels adapted from RSD or another manufacterer.  If necessary, I can switch to a narrower caliper to gain some additional clearance.
