Yes, Ron.  That is the beauty of custom fabrication!!  And a builder with a strong race background.

I just got some very insightful information from Denis at CMR.  This is akin to Mick aka Retro's sage advice on rake and trail that he has been providing us for years:


"By using a CBR600RR front end you are reducing the wheelbase somewhat. Remember the fork offset on modern forks like the CBR600RR is usually around 35mm fork offset, while the stock CB750 was much larger than that (ALMOST DOUBLE I'll have to check the actual) so by bringing the forks and front wheel back you are reducing the wheel base. You are also transferring the engine forward by that same amount (which is good). So now you have to consider two things:

1) you need to raise the rear of the bike by 25mm (1 inch) by installing longer than stock shocks. Raising the rear end of the bike will reduce the fork angle or rake angle by 1 degree (which is good). 

2) lengthening the swing arm by 25mm (1 inch) will bring the wheelbase back to where it should be and give you even more weight transference forward (which is good). Now the bike will handle quite well."



That being said, I am going to consult further with Denis as to whether to run 17" versus 18" wheels and the appropriate width for the rear wheel and tire size to maximize handling while maintaining stability.

Just my opinion Don, these bikes were built around 18/19 inch wheels, lots were raced with 18/18, , i think they just look more balanced with 18's on them. I have some pics with these bikes with 17's on them and i think they look funny unless lowered to get the proportions right, which goes against the whole handling deal....just my opinion .... ;)

I share the opinion regarding aesthetics, hence why I have always leaned toward the 18's.  To maximize handling, I am willing to consider 17's if they provide both a performance and procurement advantage.

At the end of the day Don, the bike will handle well above its original intention with the other mods, they are raced here with 18's and are stupid fast, fastest 750/4 race bikes around... ;)

More input from Denis Curtis:

"Using the stock chain, drive sprocket and rear wheel sprocket you would be able to use a 150mm wide tire on the rear 18 inch wheel rim. You would need to use a wider rim (3.5 -4.5 inch inside) than the stock CB750 rim of 2.5 inch inside width.

With the 17 inch rear rim you would be able to use a 4,5 to 5 inch rim and a 160mm rear tire. You would have to use care to ensure the make and dimensions of the tire do not exceed that 160mm width and you would need to change your sprockets to 520 which is narrower than the 530 stock chain. These sprockets are readily available, fronts in steel and rears in aluminum. There is also the possibility of using offset sprockets, but I think 160mm is wide enough for your application."

I'm inclined to go with 18" wheels front and rear.  A 150mm rear tire will provide an improved contact patch and the difference between that an a 160mm tire is not overwhelming.  Plus it will require less modification of the drive chain and sprockets AND the ride height.

Don, the K8 rear sprocket carrier sits 10mm wider, as does the K8 input shaft, thats why i'm going with a K8 bottom end for the 1000, {i'm not using stock hubs though} . With this combination you should be able to easily fit a 160 on a 4.25/4.5/4.75 inch x18 wheel. Cyclex have the offset front sprockets in 10mm as well... I know a 17 x 4.5 wheel fits as I have one in my F model frame at the moment in a stock swingarm, its off a GSXR 750J, all I needed to do was machine a little off the GSXR sprocket carrier and use a 10mm offset front sprocket to make it fit and line up... ;)  Just check out availability of 150 x 18 tires, that could be the only limiting factor, I know you can get good 160's in 18 inch, Continental has them in radials too.... ;)

I'm am anxiously awaiting my new CMR chrome-moly boxed swingarm.  Denis and Byron are somewhere in the middle of fabricating TZ frames, swingarms and my swingarm, but I expect to get it in a couple of weeks.

In the interim, I sourced a used (cheap and beat up) CBR600RR wheel.  Yes, it has a ding in the rim and it is a 17" wheel, but it can be used by the CAD programmer to measure dimensions for the brake mounts, hub thickness, bearing seat diameter, brake mounts, etc. so that a new wheel can be cut to fit or something can be machined to fit.

The axle is made from chrome-moly 4130 thick wall steel tube. Not sure if the dimensions but it is likely identical to yours.

The green 550 is still in my signature. It's a 1975 CB550K1. Right now, I'm waiting for my buddy Jay to fab brackets to mount my AP calipers (aft of the fork stanchions) and to cut spacers for my Lesters. I got longer 77-78 stanchions to fit both the Tarozzi brace and my fender. I picked up some oxidized stanchions, polished them and then had them powdercoated clear.  I also got a new pair of upper fork tubes from Frank (FBF). I will be swapping all of the internals (Racetech springs and valve emulators) over to the new forks.  I also picked up some machined preload adjusters. The tank also got a sanding a re-clear to get rid of some scratches. I'm hoping to have it roadworthy soon.

The brown 1978 CB550K dropped off my signature until I can figure out its fate. I was collecting parts to rebuild it but I'm having some issues with title. If that doesn't pan out, those parts (TTR400'swingarm, ported head, over bored cylinders, spare gas tank, etc.) will get transplanted into the CB550K1. It's up in the air but all of those parts will make it to one of the 2 550 bikes.

The 550 has been running and complete for about a year, but I doubt it's worthiness as BOTM material.  She has pretty paint and some great mods, but no detailed shine or polish to the frame and engine.  She's a good little runner and fun to ride.  I think she might warrant a nomination ONCE I upgrade the front, brakes and wheels (Lesters).  I think she might be a contender a that point.
