Propane powered 750?
« on: December 20, 2013, 09:08:42 AM »
Found an interesting short video of SOHC 750 running on propane.   He has a ways to go but its a start.  Making a tank for propane is going to be tricky.

Interesting little engineering exercise but I have to wonder about the safety of propane (tank, lines, etc.) and how you would protect them well enough should you have an accident on the bike..  heaven forbid.  ???

Gasoline isn't that safe either.

Propane is used in other applications guys, branch out. Truck guys run propane. Propane powered gas grills sure seem safe to people...

How about burning grease dropping on the rubber supply hose under the grill? And I thought everything was going fine till the grilled burgers started to smell like burning rubber!

High pressure gas is just fine when the tank is protected from accidents. Leave it to UPS and big buses. No matter what - you can't protect yourself on a bike from it. The tank as it is can fly away and has a valve to keep the fuel from spraying. If you want the same with pressurized gas, it will be thick metal and heavy like any other tank and you'll have to take care to be sure that the valve is 'approved' as these things have regulation in some countries. Like sitting over a bomb. Not to forget mention that the weight raises the center of gravity dramatically.

That's just me - great engineering exercise and exciting to do - to get it to idle and accelerate and cruise perfectly. Not my cup of tea but fine in my old 70s Oldsmobile  ;)

Well aware of propane powered four-wheelers, but those fuel systems are far better protected in these applications. As for gasoline being not much safer, sure is. It's not stored in a pressurized container and it doesn't explosively and instantly vaporize if the pressure is released. And few barbecue grills travel down the road at 75 mph.

I just mean don't just say it doesn't sound safe for no reason. Practically speaking on a motorcycle, forget that, I think its hung out a little too much. Should have said more before

Whoa! Not the most attractive, but I bet it was a fun project.  ;) It brought to mind this scene from Dr. Strangelove...
