I figured the best way to work the cranking issue was to try to isolate as much as I could.  I figured it would be pretty easy to isolate the top end from the bottom end.  Right under the valve cover are the four bolts that hold the head on.  Those bolts also hold the rocker assemblies.  I just took the 4 bolts out of each head, lifted up the rocker assemblies, took out the pushrods and tightened the heads back down. 

I started with no plugs in it and it cranked over much like it did before.  Next I put plugs in it an lo and behold it cranked over fine.  Not only that, the oil pressure built up as evidenced by the oil light going out.  Some more cranking and I saw oil flow at the heads/rockers. 

So with the valve train disconnected, it seems to work fine.  Now all I have to do is figure out how to make it run on only a compression and power stroke   ::) ::)  The valve train is pretty heavy duty.  There's 4 valves per cylinder and the valve springs are doubled.

That's where I'll have to leave it for next weekend.

I decided after I got back from Barber's that I was going to start this thing or die trying.  I put the pushrods back in and bought a battery.  I even bought another motor off a guy up there in Moody while I was up there.  In the case I did something wrong during the rebuild, I'd have a whole 'nother motor to work with.  The game plan was to defeat the starter safety switch and help it along by pushing it while I hit the starter button. 

Of course I'd find it leaking antifreeze but I think I have that under control.  One of the tubes from the thermostat to the cylinder head is chewed up so I'm trying to epoxy it smooth.  Tomorrow I'll smooth it up and get it back on.

So I got my battery today and after all that angst, the damn thing started right up when that battery was put in it.  I figure my jumper cables weren't making a tight enough connection.  It never had a battery, just my jumper cables clamped to the + and - leads.  I guess it wasn't enough.  It's a real lesson learned for me and  now I have a CX650 motor that I won't be using.

I'm working on getting the exhaust back on it and cleaned up now.  I'm not sure I bought new float bowl gaskets either so I may need to do that, one was leaking.  But yeah... started right up.   :)

That ain't the half of it.  I even bought a GL650 output shaft for it.  According to the CX/GL compatibility document, that's the only difference between the CX and GL 650 motor so I went ahead and bought one so I wouldn't have to take mine apart to use it.

I actually rode it to the end of the block and back a few times.  Now I can start looking for the little things may not be right. 

I noticed another antifreeze leak.  This time from the other tube from the thermostat to the left cylinder head.  The valves seem a little noisy on the left side so I'll check the tappet clearance again.  The speedo doesn't work and the temperature gauge doesn't either.  I noticed the fan does kick on though. 

It shifts perfectly smooth but I'm wondering if those longer clutch springs are going to be necessary, the handle is really easy to pull in and it seems like it slips in third gear.  The battery is definitely charging too and I synced the carbs.

One thing I noticed is that it made way more racket than my CX500 did.  I figured I needed to adjust the tappets.  Adjust them?  No...  How about put them back in after they shook out.  I must have not tightened them down real good when I adjusted them.  The bike is much quieter now, just like my old CX.

I worked on the other water pipe and there are no more leaks from up there but I still had a spot form underneath it.  It's coming from way in the front so I took the radiator off and there was no coolant anywhere on the motor so I'm guessing my radiator is toast.  So I'm off today to find a radiator tester to make sure.

I rode it around a while before I took the radiator off.  Apparently I'm missing a 7VDC regulator these bikes used for the temperature gauge too.

Yeah, this has been a real PITA for sure.  I rented a pressure tester from Autozone and can't seem to find any leaks in my radiator.  I put it in my sink and submerged it.  I have a post on the CX forum about it.  I should be able to solder it...  if I can find any leaks.  Maybe I'm just not looking hard enough on the bike.

The brakes were dragging pretty bad.  I hoped bleeding them real good would help but with this bike of course it wouldn't.  I realized dual caliper brakes are a PITA, especially when there's dual pistons.  It took some wrangling to get the pistons out.  They have to come out at the same time and then I had to get creative to block the left brake line while I worked on the other side.  I pulled it off with a penny, a washer and an inner tube clamped with a pair of vice grips. 

You can see in the picture one was really gunked up.  There was an o-ring of some sort smashed in there too  ???  The caliper seals and the dist seals appear to be available so I'll get new ones.  The pistons themselves didn't look too bad after some cleaning. 

I also changed out the clutch springs with the longer ones that came with a clutch basket I ordered.  I'm sure I had the right springs in it but the clutch slipped.  It was especially bad with the dragging brakes.  I rode a few rounds to the end of the street and it goes pretty good now.  Then I had to pull the clutch cover back off since the gasket wasn't put on right and it leaked oil.    ::)

The speedometer gear was chewed up.  The gear was plastic in this bike but still available thankfully.  It looks like I'm missing a dust seal and a washer too.

It's fast approaching the time to put this on the road.  I got all my brake parts and rebuilt the calipers last night.  This morning, I resolved an issue with the temperature gauge.  They had a 7VDC regulator in these bikes that powered the gauge.  Initially I thought I was missing the regulator but I found it in the harness box behind the fairing.  Everything was fine on that end, it turned out to be a really corroded wire from the sensor itself.

Lights and signals are good all around now and I ordered an electronic speedometer sensor last night based on trueblue's nice electronic gauge thread.  Once I pick out a speedo from speedhut, I'll have that resolved AND have an odometer set at 0.  That's a nice touch for a completely rebuilt motor with many NOS parts in it.

I never did pinpoint the radiator leak but after I changed the radiator hose form the thermostat to the top of the radiator, I haven't seen any drops. 

Now it's just a matter of body parts.  I bought Honda silver paint that is very close but not perfect.  A couple bolts for the seat and rear cowl and that will wrap it up.  I rode it and it runs great, shifts perfectly.

 I had the GL500 Silverwing and it had a tailtrunk that I could swap out for the passenger seat which had a backrest that came in quite handy on those long rides. Does the GL650 have one ?

The 650s came with the same thing.  Matter of fact I think the GL500 stuff fits but the bike didn't come with either.  I've found a seat cheap off ebay so that's what I went with.  I looked around at Barber's for Silverwing stuff but I didn't see anything.

I scored a couple of decent side covers off ebay and registered and insured it the other day.  It's officially road legal.  The tank is going to be painted with Nimbus Gray Metallic I got on ebay but it slightly different than the nimbus gray that the bike came with.  The rear seat cowl is painted that color too.  I'm chomping at the bit to ride it but my speedo is going to be another week or two...

Larry,
Times have sure changed.  The gulf coast is definitely military friendly these days.  It's a shame that guys were treated the way they were back in the Vietnam era.  I've never been treated with anything but respect (in the USA) and I'm thankful for it.

I got tired of waiting on my speedo, I just had to ride this thing.  I decided to do a break in today and pretty much followed what is discussed here:  http://www.mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm  My odometer ended up biting the dust along with the speedo which had already gone but I know I did at least 20 miles.  The tach is no good either.  It was bouncing between 4000 and 7000 RPMs most of the ride but the temp gauge works. 

I changed the oil right after I got back.  Nothing major noted.  I adjusted the clutch, and that was it....

Oh, I painted the tank last night.  The color is a shade different but it's close.
