piece of shed - any gambrel expertise?
« on: December 20, 2013, 07:08:54 PM »
I'm doing gambrel roof angles and wonder if there are any hints. It has to span 12' and from my understanding 6'   high at the ridge as half the distance spanned, a  standard gambrel being basically an octagon.   I'm dealing with mostly 6.5- 7' boards and would like to get as much headroom as I can.

Anyone know of any public domain cad programs?

You can easily just mock it up by laying it out on the ground. That will give you an idea of how high you can build it with the boards that you have.  Are you building a Truss gambrel or a beam gambrel roof?

I was going to build rafters with stitched with plywood but now it seems I will have shop space and a trailer large enough  to haul them so I will probably make a jig and make whole trusses.

I guess like you said laying out the pieces and see what I get,  as far as angles for the cuts not sure yet.  I might do a two foot pony wall to add more headroom.

Call your local Truss supplier, they will lay it out well enough for you to copy if you want. (Home Depot & Lowes often have this help at their contractors desk)

Or you might find the cost of buying the roof structure from them is well worth the cost, particulary if you are dealing with local code enforcment..

Code enforcement is a permanent green light in the county where it's being built.  I posted a picture of the inspector who just sits around and bleats or whatever goats do while he watches me work.

It's designed as  a copy of the 12x 16  ones they sell at DePot  with a beefier 2x8 loft and 2x6 rafter. And then the guy wants an extra 4' off each end of the loft, so 12x 24'  up there.

I am using recycled 2x6 that are all about 77 inches so it could actually span closer to 16 feet, but I'm going to try to add a bit steeper pitch (and headroom) by manipulating angles a couple degrees.

Okay, here's what I came up with after matching and laying out scraps, Spans 145"+ and has a height of about 9' in the center. The angle at the ridge the saw is set on about 32. The top of the lower piece is cut at about 22' if I remember correct.  I didn't take a picture of the whole span together.

These were all bunks torn out of a frat house so they were mostly between 6' and 7'. I culled out the shorter ones for the top pieces. The best thing  about  laying it out is more cubic feet per board and less scrap.

Here's the first few.  The 2x8 is  part of the jig.
