CB750 Rear Brake Switch and Neutral Switch
« on: December 23, 2013, 03:31:55 PM »
Hello,

I have a '77 or '78 CB750 (sold as a '77, VIN runs as a '78).  I'm new to all of this so please bear with me.  There is currently no rear brake switch or neutral light and I'm trying to understand where those are and how to attach the rear brake switch in particular.

I can see a notch with the rear brake shift lever accessible through it (first picture), but I don't see a bracket where the switch would attach.  What type of switch do people normally use for these and where does it sit on the frame?

For the neutral switch, I can't seem to find the switch itself.  I do see just a single wire visible slightly inside the casing near the shifter (second picture).  Do I need to open the casing to access the switch?  Is that visible wire likely running from it currently?

Any and all help is appreciated!

Picture on the left shows how the brake switch is installed. Picture on the right shows the cable going to the neutral switch--which can easily be replaced.

Here you get a good look at the neutral switch and how it is secured. Just look at the right side on the last pic and follow the cable.

By the way: judging from the rear brake, I assume this to be an "F" model. In that case you either have a "K" engine or an "F1" engine (76 or earlier) for the 77 and 78 F models had black engines (and Comstar wheels).

Thanks Wobbly, that is all very helpful.  It looks like I'm missing the bracket where the rear brake switch attaches and will need to pick up one of those.  Here is my side shot of that area.

You have to find a used one since they are no longer available. I keep an eye open. Pick up a new ignition point cover while you at it. I have never seen such a thing. How the hell...? And what's up with that side cover? None of this looks right. Have you established what kind of frame and what kind of engine you have?

The switch itself and the spring are available. The bracket looks like something not too hard to make yourself. How about a picture of the entire bike and some numbers (frame and engine)?

Full picture attached.  I would say it was an unfinished project.  The seat, tank, and handle bars are all changed and the carbs are Keihin CR specials.  I don't have the full VINs onhand right now, but the frame starts CB750F and the engine starts CB750E.

Actually found the VIN info.  Frame is CB750F-2251966 and the engine is CB750E-2405370.
