What do you know about 400cc twins? CB/CM400, KZ400, XS400

I guess I'm looking for the pros and cons of each. I have an older model KZ400 (76) but don't know much about the newer ones, and don't know much at all about the Hondas or Yamahas. Did Suzuki even make a 400cc street bike? Anyway, any insight you can provide would be extremely helpful.
If it's worth doing, it's worth doing twice.

...kz morphed into the ugly as hell, watercooled, belt drive 440 around 1980?...pretty sure they are tough as nails, google up the Suzuki gt380, it's the baby triple, I seem to recall a gs400 in the 80's?  Xs400 should be solidly based on over a decade of Yamaha 4 stroke twin technology.

I assume you are thinking of candidates for your $500 challenge...don't forget about the cb360...very dependable, quick little bikes, 6 speed box is a blast...and comfortable if you are not too tall
If it works good, it looks good...

My wife has a 78 cb400t2 aka the hawk, great little bike but I always wished it was a 400f. The twin is great for around town, super reliable like most 70's Hondas but just falls short on the highway. It's just too small, but it would make a fun little project to turn into a tracker or some such toy. Paid $400 for it, got it running easy and it's been great ever since. Pretty bulletproof and easy to work on little bike, she's out grown it and will be on a cb650 this year.
