Yeah, what does it do?

It's about to go from suck to blow.

That's a pretty cool project. Must have been nerve wracking while it was being assembled!

Steve, here are some specs: the dish is about 75 feet in diameter, and weighs about 71 tons. It has about 300-350 square meters of reflective area. The general rule-of-thumb for power radiated by the sun is 1 KW per square meter, but the mirrors are never perfect.
Our job is to disassemble the dish, then reassemble it at a new location, where it will be used to test Sterling hot air engines.
G'day Mick. We had to coat the mirrors with a secret "mud" recipe before anyone could work above the mirrors without getting fried. :o ;D

I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

BASE jump!
No way, ain't going to happen! :o I'm skeered of heights! If I'm over 6 feet off the ground, I have a safety harness and short leash, per OSHA rules, although the leash has caused a few problems. Several times I either got it wrapped around my legs while in the basket, or forgot to un-hook from the basket and tried to walk away only to come to an abrupt stop. :-[

We have all the mirrors removed, and the dish dismantled down to the "bones". The next step is to remove the bones; that should be done this week, and transporting the large parts will take place next week. This will be an over-sized load, and will require escort and will be done late at night to lessen impact on traffic flow. We have a deadline to vacate the current location by the end of the month. So far we are on schedule....

The place where all the pieces will be stored is only about 30 miles away; where it will be reassembled is still an unknown, but a few of us are hoping it will be north of the smog-pit that Phoenix is this time of year. It was really bad this morning. (is there a puking smiley?? ;))

Hey Steve, for the pit-stop portion there were 3 of us: the crane operator, John,Clare, who loosened the nuts with a 3 1/2' long ratchet, and myself. ;D I alternated between spinning the loosened fasteners out with an impact wrench, and hooking the crane to the "ribs" and un-hooking the sling on the crane, once placed on the ground.

This thing brought back a long dormant memory.  Back in the early 1970's, one of my science teachers in either Jr. or Sr. High school had a miniature version of this device.  It was around a foot or so in diameter, a half sphere with the inside surface a polished mirror.  He took us outside with the device and would demonstrate the power of the sun rays when focused (like a magnifying glass).  As I remember, different materials would burst into flames within seconds when placed at the focal point.  Was impressive.
