Unlocking '74 CB750 gas tank
« on: January 22, 2017, 10:26:08 AM »
The other day while I was looking for some parts I ran across and brought home a non running 1974 750. Of coarse the gas cap was locked and the P.O. didn't have the key. Do these locking gas caps have one standard key to unlock them or are they all keyed differently? Are the keys readily available for them or is a drill bit the best way to go? Gregg

That is not a stock Honda lock, either find a key or drill it.
Appears to be a hex, can you fit a small set of needlenose in there?

The Honda lock works with any key [or a screwdriver]

I couldn't fit any of the needle nose pliers I had in there. I'm going to round up some smaller ones and give that a try. If that doesn't work I'll go ahead and drill it out. I wasn't aware it wasn't a Honda lock.

You could knock out the mounting posts instead of drilling out the key slot. Then you can reuse the cap assembly someday.

I tried to knock the pins out but the back one was pretty stubborn. It felt like if I hit them any harder something was going to bust off so I put the hammer down and hit them with wd40. After a day of soaking I'll go at them again lightly with the hammer tomorrow. Are those pins the posts that you are referring to?

A small drill recently helped me weaken those pins for removal on a tank I'm working on.  Replacement pin sets are available on Ebay and probably elsewhere and the replacements use small "C" clips rather than pins that are peened in place.  Much easier for future removal.

Thanks for the advice. I cut the pins off with the dremmel. I'll be looking for some of those replacement pins on eBay. On an older model 750 I have they are just straight pins that can be punched about and reinstalled with the help of some wd40.
