Regrettably no. I double-checked tonight and came up empty. None of their gauges have them. I'm going to do some research with some other members and figure out what they've done and whether they run a real time gauge or not.

I believe that Seth runs a real-time A/F monitor on his 750 to help tune his RS34s.

I've got to also check with BWaller and FunJimmy. Pretty sure they're both running some 26's too. I've marked the thread from FJ about his tuning session at Twinline already.

I wonder how necessary a constant gauge is and whether I'd be adjusting regularly. I'll probably start a thread on that topic and let the experts weigh in with good their experience and good advice. Retro may pipe in here shortly, if I'm lucky too. Undoubtedly he's got some perspective on it with his time around the track bike world. You wouldn't build a 1000cc billet fuelie just for fun...

This is the unit I am using.  It is temporarily mounted so it can be easily removed after I get the jetting correct.

Single or dual band, Mike? Do you have a target ratio for street operation?

We may need to create full thread for all the data, settings and what not for others who undertake this setup as mere mortals. Obviously, guys like Brent get lots of track data to aide their tuning decisions.

My race bike wears Mikuni 29mm smoothbores so I am no help at all! I'm also tech challenged so I can barely spell O2 sensor let alone offer advice. Among the life coaching and other bits of advice Mr. Rieck has always placed importance on dyno tuning. Joking aside it's been part of any engine build for me now.

Use your sensors if you wish, but I think it would be a another distraction riding with one mounted full time. It might help to get you close initially jetting wise, but if you can find a good dyno operator I'd be inclined to use that option to finalize the job.

I'm so pleased with the tuning of the carbs on my race bike, cooler mornings one size mainjet, hot in the afternoon 1/2 size smaller. Easy. For a street bike find middle ground, that 1/2 size won't normally be noticed.

Thanks, Brent. That's pretty much what FJ said as well. Now to find a good dyno shop near me. Last one was an absolute cluster-fck I can't even contemplate them again.

It's all been the motor build so far and gathering of parts. Once the motor is done, I'll be moving to frame mods, then body work mixed in. That's the "fast" portion of the build for me.

Cal,

It sounds like you will pass on the O2 sensor and have the dyno tuner do it with the probe, correct?  Where are you on engine reassembly?

Yes, it looks like a pass on the sensor. Unless I can't locate a competent Dyno shop. Then I'll weld in a bung on the exhaust and go to town. I may still do it anyway, just to get really familiar with tuning these things up and then attack my 550 (pods, 4:1 just like TT likes 'em). I'd have to weld in a bung there, but it's been ceramic coated outside already.

I've got some calls out already trying to find a good dyno within 100 miles.

My new favorite guy is 5 hours away.  ::) It is a problem though as so many shops do a three pull special for the v-twin guys to brag to their friends. Finding someone with actual carburetor experience who knows his machine is getting tougher. It takes a supply of carb parts as well.

I hear you. Actually just got off the phone with a pretty reputable shop about 45' away. They sell Ducs, Aprilla, Triumph and MVAs. But they do a lot of re-mapping of fuel injected systems, but I spoke with their dyno guy who professes to be very familiar with the 550 carbs I have and the CRs.

His estimate is 2 pulls, first to see where it is, second should get it very close. Said to call ahead and schedule it M-F and he'd be certain to have jets on hand for the carbs. I'll evaluate them with my 550 in a few weeks. If I'm happy and pleased, I'll forego the O2 bung and take the 500 there when done (later summer/early fall).

Worth the experiment for $200 and a printout. Next option is DC, about 160 miles away and bloody stupid traffic. My BMW dealer is pretty darn good, though I'll have to explore their experience with SOHC fuel systems in advance.

Some other pieces arrived today too: My MotoGadget M-Unit and M-Button. These will be wired in to alleviate the wire harness (simplified, left handed only control) and a single wire back to the M-Unit. Makes all the guess work of "what wire does what" for electrical retards like me. I like to think of it as "Garanimals wiring" for a nostalgic reference.

Pics show scale of size (wicked small) and ease of plugging into the M-Unit.

Subscribed !!!! Very interested in the M-Unit & M-Button

So Mr Postman brought me another dream last evening: a great big brown box with Mike's return address! The day had arrived for the dream bits to be shipped home-

Some close ups:

New Megacycle cam

I've got some clearance work to do on a few lobes

And the ported and matched intakes for my CR-26 carbs

Man, does Mike do beautiful work. I thought the pics he sent me looked pretty sexy, but holding these parts in my grubby, chubby little hands nearly brought on a heart attack.

My wife, who has patiently tolerated the steady stream of delivery drivers for the past couple of years, saw my jubilation at the latest arrival, rolled her eyes, and strode off. Some time later after dinner, she sees me walking past and asks, "Is that your new camshaft in your pocket, or are you happy to see me?". It was then that I realized, these old bikes really can rejuvenate an old man!  ;)

Shortly before we nodded off to sleep, she coos, "When is the next delivery expected?" I didn't have the heart to tell her the next box due only has spark plugs  :-[

Thanks, Mike, you may have both wrecked and saved a marriage with a single shipment-

Happy everything arrived OK Cal. Tape off the individual valve areas before clearancing and it will be OK....the nice thing about those "encased" valve areas. Vacuum and blow off before removing tape.  ;)
Now...as far as the marriage situation.... ;D

Cal,

With a 550, Honda claimed the stock motor produced 50 BHP, with the actual dyno numbers showing approximately 38 BHP.  I wonder what power this little beast will make!

I am curious as this may drive whether I decide to bore out a 550 down the road or drop in a bored out 650.
