Very stalled. He's at college for about 50 more days. Lost my garage in January due to snow collapse. I'll be borrowing space at a buddy. I'm antsy for it to be done given the investment in hard currency and not yet complete.

Cal's unsightly snow dump did a number on his garage shop and his cage ride too.   >:(

Organize a "bee" Cal, surely most of us here can swing a hammer as well as twist a wrench.

In my mind right now I picture a ramshackle shack built by a bunch of beer guzzlers! ;D

Maybe just hire a contractor.

It has been my most unpleasant and disappointing experience that, you can't hire anyone, to do anything, of any amount of money. If you want it done, do it yourself. Or wait until Armageddon for some worthless POS contractor to decide to come by and swing a hammer.

I've had 3 different contractors come to provide quotes on installing new siding on the house. They came in November. None have provided quotes despite numerous calls from me. So I anticipate having to rebuild my garage/shop by myself as well.

Want to swing a hammer, Brent? Come on down! Its only 22x26x10. Should not take more than a couple of days.

Honestly I'd love the break from here but alas...  I'd suggest a 9/12 pitch, don't let that snow pile up. It may have been a fluke but remember, weather extremes are the new norm! Plus you'll have an upstairs for the parts dep't.

I'm offended! Why would you think my guy is not legal?  I even helped him get liability insurance, my company requires it when doing build outs.

No offense intended. Far too many "hombres" around here are not. I wish more were, most of them do great work, hard work, and no excuses. They show up, turn out great work, and clean up behind themselves. Darn shame about the paperwork  >:(

Hey Cal, did insurance and builders get their thumb outta their backside and fix your garage?
Is your son home from College and working on the subframe design? Or, are you still buried by daughter's traveling teams and your work travel?

Sorry, missed the call for an update.

The update is, there's little progress on the bike. Son is staying in Detroit working all summer, so his contribution to the bike is little to nil. I may proceed onwards and get the swing arm built anyway as it happens that I'm helping Jaguar out with some very similar parts for his Seeley swing arm.

My garage/shop is structured, now I'm just waiting on our ever-vigilant power company to decide to call me back so I can proceed with an Electrical Service permit and have new 200A service run underground to the fracking thing. Its nice to have open, clean space, but it would sure be nicer to have lights, service, and AC to work with when working on a bike. Can't move any machines back until I get the electrical done, and can't run wiring until I have a permit. So I'll sit around with my thumb up my arse waiting. Again. Still. WTF  >:(

And to make matters even worse, my 17yo (who I love dearly) almost left this world Friday. He decided apparently to give me an earlier Father's Day present. I bought him a truck and it needed brake work. So, I told him to arrange everything in the garage Friday so we could get the truck in, up on stands, and prepped for all new stainless lines, master cylinder, and calipers/rotors. He took it upon himself to try to move my daily rider (K1300s) by himself and put it back onto the rear wheel chock. He's a strapping young man, but his unfamiliarity with a 450lb low CG modern  bike got the best of him as he lunged rearward and didn't quite get the wheel up/over. So down it went.

I came home Friday AM about an hour "after" to find him sitting on the front porch, in the rain as though he were locked out. Odd, we don't even own keys to our house because we don't lock anything. I asked, "What the Eff are you doing?"

His reply, "Awaiting my execution."
"Come again?" I say.
"You're going to kill me. So I though it would be easier and less messy to be outside."
"Okay, what brand of crack are you on today, Boy?"
"I dropped your bike. I broke the rightsize mirror, the Master Cylinder, and damaged the tank."

Without a word, I walk into the house. He doesn't move. He's probably thinking, "Okay, this won't be so bad, Dad has gone inside to grab a gun, is going to step out, and put 2 in my skull. Phew, that will be merciful."

Instead, I just defuse, collect my thoughts, and then emerge about 15 minutes later. "Okay, let's go see whats up."

I gotta hand it to him, he was honest, and accurate. No hiding from his mistake. My bike looks like a drunken sailor that lost a fight on shore leave in Singapore. Worst part is, replacement parts/pieces are $1,200 from BMW, and the Master Cylinder takes 3-4 weeks to get from Germany. Even expedited. Have these people never heard of Express Shipping and Processing???

So, with the schedule I've had for the past 6 months, all the delays, the rain we've had here, I finally had a fantastic window to ride for 5 days straight with stellar, perfect weather. Wife had even asked me a hours earlier, "What are your plans for Father's Day?" "Fill my tank with fuel, take $200 of cash, plug in my earbuds, and ride my bike until I'm broke. See you Tuesday".

Well, not to be. 7 years and 35,000 miles and not a scratch on my bike. Not one. My 17yo puts his hands on it, and 15 seconds later, well, you get it. I spent the weekend in mourning feeling sorry for myself and working upside on his new truck. Sometimes, its no picnic being a Dad.

Well, I am glad the young man made it.  Been there, well actually no, I have nothing as valuable as your BMW, but there were occasions like that with my kids too.

Lesson from Mater:

Mater: Well then, no thank you. I don't get them dents buffed, pulled, filled or painted by nobody. They way too valuble.
Holley Shiftwell: Your dents are valuble? Really?
Mater: I come by each one of 'em with my best friend Lightning McQueen. I don't fix these. I wanna remember these dents forever.

LOL, Brent. I got my revenge on him in the end. He came in about 20-30 minutes after we examined the damage in the garage. There had been no cussing, no ranting, just a quiet stiff Dad. He showed up and began "listing all the other things" he'd done to prepare for the work ahead. You know, the "I'm trying to be good and atone" sort of list.

I simply raised my hand and said, "Son, you had an accident. You apologized, I accepted. Its over. You don't need to feel like you have to dig yourself out of a hole. I appreciate you doing all that stuff, but don't go overboard trying to make amends for something that has been forgiven. Use care, be responsible, and you'll be fine." I could see a glimmer of hope in his eyes just begin to surface that he might actually survive the day, when he posed the question, "Dad, you've been riding for like 35 years, how many times have you dropped your bike?"

Revenge is mine, sayeth the Dad, "Me? Dropped my bike? You must be kidding. Never. They are not for dropping, they're for riding." And I walk away. I wonder how he enjoyed having his teeth kicked down his throat without me ever having to lift a foot?  ;D Okay, maybe I could have been easier on him, but it was the best I could do in my state of mourning.

Reminds me (a little bit) of telling my dad about my first ticket.  I walked into the house, placed the car keys on his desk, told him that I had been cited for speeding, that I was wrong and that I knew I had lost my driving privileges.  My dad never screamed or did anything more than acknowledge what I told him.  I spent the next 4 months catching rides from friends and taking the bus, not asking for the car until my dad decided on his own that I deserved another chance.  Unbeknownst to me until recently, my dad told my mother that he didn't think his 1971 VW Bug could go that fast, and that I would be hard enough on myself (knowing I had lost my car privileges).

Cal, sorry to read of the misfortune of your son's good intentions paving another brick on that road we all know about.
The frustrations of dealing with gov't red tape and the builders plague and hassles.

Glad your son survived without bruises other than most of them self inflicted.

Hopefully things will start to roll together for the positive. Wonder if one of the Germany members could get the BMW parts quicker and post them to you?  There is one who happens to be a serviceman stationed there and rides a BMW along with other bikes.

OK I just stole that one from you and put it in my quiver for my response when Logan or Austin inevitably ask me that question someday.  LOL.  Sorry to hear about the bike drop but you do have to take heart that the son was actually trying to do something nice for his dad.  All too often, Father's day presents are purchased by mom and the kids don't really put any thought into it.  At least your son was trying to express his love for his dad.  That's worth more than the money.

I was very sorry to hear about your bike. However, I'll come from a slightly different perspective. I'm sure your son will walk away from this experience having learned several very valuable lessons. He will be more careful. He will respect his things and things that belong to others. He will look at you in a new light. At his age I would have given anything to have any sort of relationship with the guy who called himself my father. He just couldn't. The addiction was far too strong. I wasn't able to put it all together until well into my twenties when I stopped being as angry and looking for fights. Even though I understand now it still impacts me every day (how I view things, deal with people...even the young boy who kicked my seat and screamed for the full 7 hour flight yesterday). I think you handled it well Cal. He knows he made a mistake. Most of all, he knows you still love him and if he needs you tomorrow he understands he can still count on you.

Sorry to muck up your build thread with feelings. And please do not veer down the path of feeling sorry for me because I want nothing to do with that. There have been times when I have wanted more but I am where I am today because of all the things that happened along my journey. Sometimes I hate my job but I always know (never a doubt) that I was supposed to work with young people. Particularly angry boys who generally don't have a father figure in their lives.

Agreed, you taught your son a lesson in perspective, temper management and class.  Cool-hand Cal   8)
