Simply put, We've all heard that "Dog is Man's Best Friend" . Well, for sure, Steve was Animals BEST Friend (at the very least)!! He will surely be missed by his family, friends and all those who knew and knew of him.

I saw Steve at Australia Zoo at Easter doing his "croc show" with his wife. Very enthusiastic and an ambassador for Australian wildlife. I always thought he was nuts and should stop prodding that poor snake, but you can't deny he did many good things to preserve wildlife and promote naturalism to kids etc.

Condolences to his family.

Just think what the world would be like if everybody showed so much enthusiasm for their job. He will be missed the world over.

'Tis a sad day for Animal Planet fans.  I always thought one of the most venomous snakes in the world would get him when he had it by the tail naturally.

My grandfather was stung by a stingray in Florida.  It hit him in the calf when he stepped on it in water no deeper than his knee.  His leg swelled up and it got infected but he was all healed up in a month.

My daughter is 3, I wouldn't want to leave her with nothing but faint memories.  At least little Bob will have a thousand hours of television shows to see his dad in action.

If you would like to get a sense of the man, read this:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steve_Irwin
Dedicated to Sgt. Howard Bruckner 1950 - 1969. KIA LONG KHANH.

But we were boys, and boys will be boys, and so they will. To us, everything was dangerous, but what of that? Had we not been made to live forever?

Crikey, who would have thought that he would have had such an impact! I'm amazed at the international outpouring of condolences.. and the fact that this thread has filled three pages.

i remember thinking "what a nutball" when i first saw him.  but, crickey, if he only seemed strange because he was one of the few people who came as they were, without pretense or fear.  now that he is gone it is more clear how rare it is that we see real people on the tv.   his energy was real and that is why I miss him, real energy is hard to come by.

Well, here's my 2 cents. Didn't know much about Steve and my initial take was
here's a fellow who is showboating a bit. That's my initial take since I live out doors
99 percent of the time and have wrestled lots of different critters myself.
But given the take you aussie's have put in on him sounds like he was a good fellow
who put his "showboating" to good use.
My other initial take was, at least he didn't mind getting down in the muck with
it, unlike ole Marlin Perkins of "The Wild Kingdom" back when I was a kid.
I was always struck with how he could paddle a canoe in a wind storm and
not a hair get out of place. I reckon now he could do hair spray commercials.

Our thoughts go out to Steve's family.

I remember him also. Now that you mention it, his khakis always looked clean and crisply ironed as well.  ;D

I never saw the Marlon Perkins episodes, but Chuck Connors was pretty much the same, he was just a "host" while Steve really was the "show".

Certainly he was an entertainer, but he was also a responsible conservationist and I hope he will be remembered for making us all more aware of the need to preserve our environment.

His family have refused the governments offer of a "State Funeral", saying that he was just a "normal bloke", and wouldn't want the fuss. Cheers, Terry. :'(
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

I saw a brief news interview with his father where he stated this. Very down-to-earth himself.

It takes people of principle to rightly refuse such an offer. This says a whole lot about Steve.

That was nice of them to offer a large public service like that and his family must be really proud of him and the work that he did (And rightly so). I think a nice offer would be donate an approximate amount, of what the Public Funeral" would have cost, to the Cause that Steve worked for and believed in. Don't you think that would please him?

It's still hard for me to believe that he's gone. He has left such an impression
on so many of us. Those shoes will never be filled. It's like having said "Good Bye to a
                          close friend".

Ok, now here's a weird "coincidence" my son told me about yesterday, as you know Steve Irwin and Peter Brock (famous Aussie race car driver) died 4 day apart, well apparently, their birthdays are also 4 days apart! How's that for spooky? :o

No mate, Steve was 44, but Pete was 61, so I guess that's where the coincidence stops? Cheers, Terry. ???
