adjusting front drum brakes
« on: September 04, 2006, 09:17:32 AM »
i have drum brakes on my cb350f and need to get the shoes adjusted right. i have the fulcrums so as they line up with the little markings on the drum brake housing but I simply can not get the drums to fully disengage. I have taken apart everything, cleaned and greased anything that might need it and still it is worse than before. Should the brakes be adjusted at the pushrod or by moving the cams that actuate the drum brakes? Anything helps.

If the front brake is double linked you must synchronize the brake shoes. Put the bike on the center stand and put a support under the engine so the front wheel is free from the ground. Then loosen the lock nut on the connection rod , and shorten the linkage one full turn. Then spin the wheel and adjust the nut on the end of the cable, at the wheel, till you can hear the primary brake shoe touch the drum and drags slightly. Then adjust the connection rod till you can hear the other brake shoe touch the drum and drag equally. Finally fasten the lock nut on the linkage and adjust some freeplay in the cable (back it off till there is no drag). I hope this helps. 8)

Nicely described, Ibsen! That's exactly the way my Norton manual describes brake adjustment.
