Hmmm, to be honest I didn't think about that, but.... Lately in my friend's company I was investigating importing helmets from China, and it seems that getting DOT is peanuts comparig to getting ECE 22.05. Seemed like tougher standars. But the point stands - you would need to check with Airoh, but on teh safety side - don't worry, it's a quality helmet.

And just to show you what bored Europeans do...

That is AUTHENTIC fighter pilot helmet (the same shell) just adapted for the bike. I read an article, where is well overpassed ECE certification.

And just to make you laugh.... It's me and THE REAL THING! It even has a cable to connect to the pressurized suit..... seroius stuff  ;D

That helmet is SICK. I want one.

Hmmm, I DO have an original, test pilot helmet, and just for fun and for stupid looks I drive it sometimes, but to be honest (in my opinion) - an ax-hammer is never good axe nor good hammer. Bike helmet is differentand for different purposes.
That said, I DO think about buying this sometime in spring

http://www.uhma-bike.pl/akcesoria_foto.php?id=11593

Airoh TR1, and you can have it with the chin protector or remove it when you like. And it has a retractable sun shield....

just a thought..... :)

That thing is so cool!

From the same website. This is about ECE 22.05

http://www.webbikeworld.com/motorcycle-helmets/ece-22-05.htm

"A major benefit for U.S.  riders is that the ECE 22.05 standard does not directly conflict with the DOT standard.  Limited testing shows that ECE qualified helmets will also meet the demands of FMVSS 218.  Of course, not all DOT helmets will meet ECE 22.05 because the European standard does require testing at higher velocities than DOT.  "

So, What does that mean?

-----

And  a quick excerpt in the article about the helmet above which is ECE 22.05 certified

"But it's also functional, because it apparently meets ECE 22.05 standards for motorcycle helmets, or it wouldn't be for sale in Europe.  We obtained our example from MotoTwin, the UK distributor, which also ships worldwide.  GPA helmets are not labeled as meeting U.S. DOT standards, but it's likely that they could receive DOT approval if and when the company decided to sell them here."

Bottom line: if you wear a DOT helmet in Europe you may run into problems with the authorities because the DOT, although a national standard, is not as rigourous as the European standards. If you wear any motorcycle helmet with an official standard mark you will be ok in North America. Even though some Davida helmets are 'non-approved' I would be surprised if a federale here would hassle you for wearing one.

And of course here in British Columbia you can ride around with a salad bowl strapped to your head and get away with it.

But remember again, dear forum friends, no chin protection = no chin in one out of three accidents.

what that means, golden child, is exactly what nick has just confirmed.

do NOT try wearing a DOT approved helmet in the UK - they will pull you over and take away your first-born - they are serious about sh*t like that over there...

over here? much less stringent regulations - although i would be curious to hear from a LEO as to what exactly the law is...i'm pretty certain that even a helmet approved under the scricter regulations would be liable for a ticket if the individual officer had the bug up his butt.

Those pilot-looking helmets look as if the air would go under the visor and directly into your eyes.  One company said I can take the visor off, but it's not necessarily made for goggles.  They allegedly fit better than Davida though.
I wear a Davida here and have never been hasseled... but that doesnt especially mean anything. A conundrum.  Those Cromwells are 'spensive, Lucy!

Chopper pilots wear those style helmets also. Very good for head protection against bumping your head in high G maneuvers. Useless on a Motorcycle to protect angaint facial and jaw injury.

That bike gets phtographed a lot.  Think I'll throw in a shot of the one I sold to buy something else...

So- those Cromwells are about $400 American. YeeOOOOWWWWW if I was working, I'd consider it.  I'm nuts. Sue me.  I also like the looks of that Davida 3/4, Does anyone have one of those?  Does it fit like the stinky pudding bowl that gives me a headache after 60 miles?

She lives near to me that bird ;D and nearer to Dave Biffta :(

Paul, I have an open faced jet helmet like the one the girl is wearing.
I use a wrap round visor and dont have any problems with wind.
It's a Bell helmet made in Italy by Beffie and was about £80 ($144)ish, it's light and conforms to British standards and ACU racing use.

Hey Sammer- come back!  I can't send you a PM; Is that Davida any different from the Bell we can get in the 'States for about $100 ?  How does the fit compare to the pudding bowl?

Hi Paul, I was about to reply last week but the server went down.
The helmet I have is made by Bieffe in Italy, they are a subsidiary company of Bell helmets.
I can't tell you anything about Davida apart from they look well made, are made down the road from me in Liverpool and use a smart looking chick in their adds.
The one thing I do know about them is, although they conform to European standards, the last I heard was that they did not conform to British standards and could not be used on the roads in the UK.
I am not sure that this is still the case, but if you can get a Bell helmet for a good price, then go for it.
I got my race helmets at cost price from AGV but the retail price of the Bieffe was cheaper than AGVs cost price.
It cost more in time filling out contract forms, I thought, sod it and bought the Bieffe.
