upgraded charging system question
« on: January 04, 2014, 02:14:33 PM »
Although my trike is a "A" I doubt if the charging sys is any different than the standard.  I need a better charging sys.  due to all the extra 12v stuff on it (hyd pump, reverse,....) it just can't keep up except for long runs.  I do have a 2nd battery mounted (lawn tractor type) and it helps but not enough.  Did the law enforcement bikes have a larger charging system due to the extra lights and radios? anyone know of any upgraded systems available?
thanks neal

Your A should have a 280W output vs the standard 225W system. The field coil is wound differently with larger wire and less resistance to produce higher output. Our bikes are notorius for puny charging systems. Most times it's something simple like a bad wire, a bad rectifier leg, corroded and/or loose bullet connectors, bad igntion switch, voltage regulator, etc. Have you checked your charging voltages at the different rpm ranges? If it's up to snuff with this test then I'd speculate that you may well be overloaded.
