CB500K0 build. "600cc Hot Street" setup K0 CBR600RR cafe
« on: January 02, 2014, 12:32:33 PM »
so the cb500k2 i bought dad last august for his birthday came with a partially complete, extremely weathered cb500k0. coincidentally, his first bike was a k0 and i always wanted a first year 500 since i acquired my granddads 73 cb350f for my first motorcycle and thus spawned my passion for these old bikes.

i always had the desire to build a first year cb500 with a cb550 engine modified into a ~600cc mildly built streetable engine transplanted onto a somewhat stripped chassis with upgraded electrical and braking systems and suspension from the ground up. i mainly wanted to piece it together. i didn't want to go all out but i did wish to make it more modern without losing the classic cafe look. i work for a large Honda dealer in Virginia and hopefully the dealer connections will help with some of the parts acquisition and budget.

the theme behind it is to be like first year cbr600rr from 40 years ago but still be very streetable and not need to replace the internals (rods, crank, transmission) to keep it from flying apart

my plans include:

performance
- dyna 3ohm
- dyna-s electronic ignition
- keihin CR series carbs (size recomendations?)
- pod filters
- 4-1 exhaust
- oil cooler
- port and polish head__________
- ~600cc pistons                            \
- 650 cam or webcam                      \
- +1 mm valves                                 \
- upgraded springs and retainers      >  (dynoman hot street kit?)
- upgraded clutch                              /
- better cylinder studs___________/

chassis
- stainless brake line
- new bearings and seals
- new drag bars
- allen head bolt kit for engine and new stainless hardware where needed
- rearsets
- fiberglass seat
- progressive rear shocks  (toyed with a monoshock idea)
- steering stabilizer _________________________
- racetech fork springs and cartridge emulators        \
- slotted and drilled rotor                                            > may swap the front out entirely
- fork brace   _______________________________/
- smooth out the welds, grind tabs and paint the frame
- AM26 roadrider tires
- clear out under seat and relocate electronics under seat hump

im sure i left some things out and i realize that many of ideas may change as i get to them and holes will be filled as they appear but i had to start with a game plan and a chunk of metal

i have checked a few part #'s to see what stuff i can practice doing on the junk motor or have sent off as a core (head, cams, covers). that will let me have some of the work done while not tearing apart a running motor or having it done already. that will also allow me to clean up some of the components and swap parts

prep on frame # cb500-1046253 has already begun and i have filed for a virginia title

so as it is, i have a rolling chassis with a seized 95% complete engine.  i'm looking for a cb550f donor bike for parts to transplant (harness, controls, tank, brakes). i have some of the original parts from dad's bike that aren't being used but his 500k2 build is similar to mine. a couple days ago a customer came in with a running complete 77 cb550f in pretty good shape that would be a suitable donor with 30,000 miles. he wanted $1000. ill have to think about it. id be able to sell off the stuff i didn't use and use alot of the stock parts preliminarily and upgrade as i go (rotors, rear susp, forks, etc) and still have a running, usable bike

id like to have 3500 or less in this project but we will see how it goes

Nice build specs.  $3.5K may be optimistic taking into account the bike, CRs, engine rebuild (oversized valves) and fork rebuild.

You may wish to graft on an entire GL1000 front end (75-77 -- forks, trees, brakes, discs, calipers, spacers, etc.) with shortened tubes.  It will be bolt on except for the steering stem, which will need to be shortened or have your 550 stem pressed in and welded.  It will help address the wobbliness of the front end, and give you a no-fuss dual disc brake set up that works.

You can find a host of your parts list at Cycle X and Dynoman Performance:
http://www.cyclexchange.net/500-550-Hi-Perf.htm
http://www.dynoman.net/bikepages/cb550/

I think CR26's will work well with your motor specs.

Porting and oversized valves will likely give you the best gains. CR29s may be better for top end. Assuming this is going to be a street bike/canyon carver, the 29s may be overkill and bog.

That said, My experience is limited to 750s, so let's see what the 550 set says. You should also call Mike Rieck or Ken at Cycle X.

I've just begun a similar condition bike (seized, '73 500) and it seems the CR26 is most recommended for our bikes. I'm ordering mine thru Godferreys via Jeff at PowerBarn. Seems a bit pricey, but a fully thought-thru kit.

I just finished up a '74 550 and tear down on the 500, so I may have some spares you're welcome to. I'll be going GSX front end and custom monoshock rear, so swing arms, trees, front hub, all sitting around.

Just got the top end off the motor and frame blasted down to repair the cancerous rot!

you've got my attention. i'm thinking of doing very similar work on my 550f with the exception that i want to keep it looking stock. so no oil cooler, pods, rearsets etc. but all the suspension and head work.
goal is the same: street and "brisk touring" (as the old honda commercial said).

your list looks good, should  make a nice ride  :)

IBHR,

Another 550!?  So, have you decided on what you want to do with the front end.  I saw that you previously had a line on a GL1000 front.  That's a very good, plug and play set up (save for the steering stem needing to be shortened -- you may be able to have a machine shop shorten and thread the stem).

You could always go for a GSXR USD fork and get modern radial mounted brakes.

call me an old fashioned purist but i want the bike to look vintage and be honda

I can appreciate that.  I have two cafe projects -- one incorporating more modern suspension/brake technology ('08 CBR600RR front) and the other using period correct upgrades ('76 GL1000 front).

Forks by Frank, Z1, maybe even CycleX (not sure about 550 forks, though they list 750s)

Why does the bottom part of my right front fork look like it has a spot for another brake caliper? it has all the same holes as the left tube just as a mirror image. my cb500K0 doesn't have it. what's up with that? is there a caliper made that fits there? what spoked wheel has dual calipers and the right spacing. i know where a gl1000 wheel is. will it fit?

so many questions lol

The lowers will accept a second disc on the right. There's a few mounting tweaks needed and an issue with having to abandon the speedo gear to get it all to fit properly.

If you switch to GL forks, you need the whole shebang to get it to fit properly. Check out KrautKoffins slowest 550 build. He's doing the same thing.

Personally, duals for the stock engine/HP probably isn't necessary as long as the braking system is fully rebuilt and up to spec. But it never hurts. Probably should drill the rotors to aide in weight gains for second rotor.

was planning on drilling the rotors anyways. the engine will not be stock. the braking on my 350f is poor and would definitely like more stopping power. what wheel and what caliper are used with the stock forks?

i see that the tubes for 75 are different ppart number from 76. which is also a different part number from 77 and 78. if i order cyclex fork tubes are they guaranteed to fit. will cb500k0 tubes fit? because i have a set of those on the shelf?
