750 K3 - First day back on the road
« on: January 06, 2014, 09:12:58 AM »
I sold my 500 a few months ago and was able to pick up this 750 K3. I think the last time it was on the road was 1998. That was the date on the license plate registration sticker. My dad picked up it really cheap about a year ago. He had done a few things to get it closer to being roadworthy. It needed a new carb rack which he got from a salvage place in GA (657B). The inside of the tank was really bad so he had that cleaned and lined at a radiator shop (Red Kote). It was running at that point and compression checked out really well (170 on all 4 with a thread-on tester). It needed an 18" rear wheel which I got from Bill Benton along with some other bits. With some help, it got the 3k service along with a lot of other things to freshen it up. Mileage is just under 11k.

So far it got: Metzeler Lasertecs with fresh tubes and strips; repro 750K Euro bars from DSS along with correct length throttle cables and clutch cable; repro MC, caliper body and piston from DSS; EBC pads; stainless lines from Slingshot; carb dust boots and band clamps; Honda float valve set; petcock; Scorpion AGM battery; Honda air filter; Hondaman blade fuse kit; NGK resistor caps; DID chain and JT sprockets; Honda fuel line; other bits and pieces.

I've only been able to have it out on a short run. Initial impression was great. I liked my 500, but I love the feel of the 750. It's not tuned 100% yet. I'm still assessing everything, but it's a little flat and unresponsive in the mid range (5k RPMs). I'll post detailed questions on issues once I'm clear on what they are.

It looks pretty good I think. The engine cases have a good amount of oxidation and there are similar bad spots on the frame. My goal is to get it running really well and see how good I can clean it up as a runner vs. stripping it down and painting frame/motor, etc. It's running stock air box with 4-1 and 110 mains. The only other thing not stock on it at this is point is the bar end mirrors. I'm looking forward to getting it tuned 100% and learning more.

It looks really good from 5' away, but gets a little worse the closer you get! Even though it's winter, VA is pretty mild and I've been without a bike for over a month, so I just want to ride it for now. I can debate things like full restoration next winter or another year.

Nice start and she does look good!  I got my K3 running last year.  Out riding today?  I am jealous, it is -13F here in Iowa.  I could use a ride myself.

Anyway,  GLAD some one is on the road!!
