I've heard torsion bars can be converted to valve springs. Any thoughts on expenses/longevity pros/cons? It's a 2000 mileage engine.

Crap bill forgot about that roller. On it!

I just got in on this thread and this is one Awesome thing to do for your Dad. And dhall, that Video was really something and Thank you for putting that up there. When my Dad was still young enough to be able to get out on a bike, I wish I could have afforded to have done that for him. Only, my Dad's bikes were Indians and there would have been no way that I could have done something like that.

This thread is REALLY AWESOME and, after watching the video, I can only imagine the reaction THIS 450 is going to bring. Fantastic thing you are doing.  8)

hey thanks Bill. I have a soft spot for him. he is not my real father. he is my stepdad, but as I have not spoken with my real father since he left when I was 6, this guy has been my dad for the last 18 years. I am confident he will love it and can't wait to go riding with him

an update. I went a little crazy ordering parts....just put in another order over 1K...whew. I actually can only name a few things coming, but my swingarm has been sent off to hondaman for a proper rebuild and I have almost all chassis parts.

the frame is finished be painted as well as the center stand. can't paint the swingarm until it gets back so now it will be little things here and there. progress

You missed the boat Bill it's all gone! Gotta sell another guitar or two to get back on top. Poor 78F is sitting in the room looking all helpless. No money for her right now.

Sounds like that 450 is going to be done RIGHT and that is cool, if you can do that. BTW, The fact of what you are doing for your stepdad, tells who has earned the respect. Sadly, some "dad's" are, in reality, a sperm donor. Excuse me, if that's a bit bold, but it's reality. Sounds like an Awesome relationship. Proud you've got him. And he's gonna love that bike, for ALL of what it represents.  ;)

a little more of a real update, this time with pictures!

roomate helping me with the old possibly original tires

tires off!

most of the black frame related parts painted! just waiting on the swingarm from hondaman and I need to do my triple bottom/stem. trying to find out which spacer to put under the tapered bearing (really don't want to have to do it twice!)

burned the old paper filters off of the housing. fun stuff. do this outside and be careful

then I replaced the paper material with oiled uni foam material. it is slightly larger than needed so it sits in place with no need for any glue. it isn't moving. hopefully that will be close to the original filter

tackled the carbs. replaced everything inside with new OEM stuff. shiny brass inside. for now I am going to keep the bodies the original carb color for contrast. that might change when I get the engine and paint it the same color as the accelrator pump and bowls in this pic. this is VHT cast aluminum and Yolanda's engine and carbs are painted this color. I did polish the choke linkage and bowl clips. time consuming and messy

now some parts pictures. I am helping keep Honda in business..haha about $2000 worth of parts so far. going all out for my pops. here are some NOS standard pistons. Bill measured the bores after honing and they are basically brand new. expected considering its a 2000 mile engine. he has NOS rings, wrist pins, and I have the pin clips.

gasket kit. I bought two unsure of what I needed. better safe than sorry

lots of parts: wheel bearing retainers, chain adjusters and hardware, fork ear pieces, reflectors and bases, gaitors, petcock, gas cap, latch, 5.5mm hose 3.5mm hose, hose clips, frame>tank rubber holder, tach cable, speedo cable, clutch cable, throttle cable, right switch, headlight, tank gold stripes, NOS speedo and NOS tacho. also got allballs wheel bearings and taper neck bearings.

not pictured yet is the frame which is painted and finished, handlebars (using K1 bars), new DID front and rear rims, tires, and tubes. waiting for spokes to arrive. tomorrow hopefully I can soda blast the hubs, and get the bearing retainers out along with the old bearings and replace them. also get the hubs painted up with the VHT cast aluminum. I am using that on the fork lowers too. I also received my POR-15 kit for the tank. it has held up well in Yolanda for the last 6000 miles.

next steps for me are getting the paint ordered. I am going with "tuskey green" again which is my version of the honda candy blue-green. my dad swears his bike was "that" color every time he sees my bike. so I am not going to be picky. if he loves it and that's what he remembers then by all means he is getting that paint! it will be nice to have matching bikes too ;)

gotta get the tank cleaned and coated inside, forks rebuilt, new master cyclinder and slingshot cables. still need front and rear sprockets and chain. waiting on the swingarm so I can paint it and get things ON the frame. right now I am kinda waiting on everything to really put anything together. of course the most important part, the engine, is up in ATL waiting for me. Bill and I should have all the necessary parts now, I just need to get up there in the next few weeks and we can get started building it!

I know this has been a lot of pics and text but an update was needed. thanks for reading. its coming together!

I forgot this build was going on, Awesome work Justin!  And you say I work fast and don't follow a budget... ;D
I built my dad and brother Harley Roadkings (they bought the bikes, I customized them) and it was very rewarding and cool to get the nod from them when people compliment their bikes.
Your a good son!

haha Bill, exactly. now I never said I didn't go all out either Tige ;) only the best for my dad. I am rushing to get this thing done so I can put some miles on it and troubleshoot/make sure everything is just right. (on the original speedo of course!) then I will put the NOS one on for him to enjoy :D then its all about the logistics of getting it up north 1000 miles away and having all the pieces fall together. My roomate had a great idea, everyone in the family will give him wrapped old parts off the bike, he will know in the back of his mind something is coming. rather than completely catch him off guard. this way he can see a small portion of the old and then the last gift will be the keys to the bike, parked outside. I can't wait!

You've got more patience than I did on the Uni-foam mod. Congrats! I still have brand new Uni material if anyone wants some.

Great to see you got the right gauges too with the indicators built inside.

Does anyone know what spacer is used on the stem tapered bearing? I have the all balls kit with a thick and thin spacer just like with the 750, I actually think  it's the same kit. Don't want to put the wrong spacer and have to take the bearing off and do it again. Thanks

Trial and error.

I had heard most to be using the thick spacer, so I did just that. Turned out it was way too much by a specific amount. Had to disassemble, but it wasn't too bad being that there was a thick spacer back there to help drive out. I figured that if the spacer's width measurements were subtracted, then it would be ideal. Turned out, Whola.

Sorry, not that helpful...

The proper way is to assemble the old bottom with at least 3 balls, check theinstalled height and choose washer to match the height.

And you are right, mess it up and you will have to remove the race - impossible without damage.

Good news is Allballs will sell you just one bearing - and dont ask how I know :)

I used the thinner washer and it seems to line up the fork ears well. will find out for sure when I tighten the steering nut down more than hand tight.

working on the gas tank liner today. about to start the 8 hours of hair dryer to get it bone dry. also working on rear brake, hub. and front hub.....and yolandas carbs...gah!

Tell you what Chef, I don't see anything to replace on that rear rim. The inner rust is minor and the spokes don't seem to have any rust. That wheel looks like it would clean up like new with some elbow grease and 0000 steel wool.
