Z50 basket case....SOO Tempting!
« on: January 12, 2014, 04:04:17 AM »
There's a 1974 Z50 basket case near me. It's been for sale for a couple of months and he's asking $250. I think I could get it cheaper.

"Bike was running when disassembled. Had plans to restore but lost interest.
Will need new rear hub, front fender, rear tire and rear tail light assembly."

He said the hub has a stripped or broken stud. I feel like I could probably fix that. These old Z50's bring pretty decent money when assembled. I'm SERIOUSLY considering grabbing it and dropping in a Chinese engine of 110-160cc, just for sh!ts and giggles.

 What say ye?

I went by the Honda Doctor in Waterford on Friday - he was closed but the showroom was full of 60's and 70's Hondas, maybe 15 bikes: Dreams, 305 Scramblers, 500/550s, 3-CB750s, also three restored mini-trails right in the front window. I'd say go for it, keep it and enjoy it.

I also found a 2003 XR50 project about an hour away. It already comes with a Lifan 140cc, minus the carb and throttle. Lots of spares.
I wonder if I could put the early sheet metal on the '03 frame? I can get the '03 for less than the cost of the 140 engine, but would have to source a carb. It also has USD forks, modern-ish swing arm, etc.

To make a rider out this, expect to spent $ 500.00 or so, for a show bike, add another $ 1000.00

I'd say make a rider out of it. They can be licensed and make the best camp bikes.
