1972 CB500 clutch cable problems
« on: January 09, 2014, 07:22:15 PM »
Hi guys,

When I got the bike a few months ago the clutch cable was rusted and broke off. I opened the panel where it goes into the engine and the marble fell out. I replaced the cable, added the marble back but when I press the clutch it stays engaged. I'm not sure where to start. Not sure if the clutch plates are stuck. If the spring is damaged or if it's just adjustments to the cable. I see a lot of people have broken clutch rods but mine is still in good condition.

I have the manual and I've tried figuring it out but can't find a way to check where my problem is. Anyone have a way to check if the problem is at the clutch level or simply adjustments that are needed? The big flat head screw on the outside of the clutch cover doesn't turn, is it an adjustment screw ? Are they known to seize over time ?

If it was mine I'd start by pulling the cover back off again, and servicing(cleaning/greasing) the release mechanism (the bit that the ball bearing fell out of). If the big flathead-screw adjuster wont turn after loosening the bolt next to it to you can remove it from the cover to clean it up by removing the bolt so the adjuster-retainer thingy inside comes off, and from the outside driving it through with a wooden drift and a hammer.

Pull out the push rod and make sure it is still in one piece. Also check the cylinder actuator and collar to see if they are cracked.

The push rod measurements are:
10 1/8 inches or 257 mm long
3/8 inch in diameter or 9.5 mm

Got it all out but the cylinder actuator is cracked and 1 day after I cleaned and put it back together bike started leaking oil somewhere below the oil pump... :-/
