Bench test new wiring?
« on: January 23, 2014, 07:31:52 PM »
Guys, rebuilding a bike from the ground up. Hooked up the electrical last night for a test but didn't have power to the controls and gauges. All electronics are new except the stator/field coil. I modified the new harness in a couple of places but nothing major. I've also converted a DOHC reg/rect to work with this system. My questions is, can I take the whole thing off the bike and bench test it? The only items that wouldn't be connected are the charging system, and starter.

Will it still start? Did you wire it through the ignition?

Ok, I was just going over the diagram again and found the problem... it's "i'm an idiot"! It is wired through the ignition, which is new as well. My new layout has the switch somewhat hidden and I had forgotten to turn it on! Anyway, I'm still curious to know if it would be possible to test everything off the bike (blinkers, gauge lights, switches etc.).

well, of course: nothing magical about being close to the frame. you just have to connect all the various parts - and provide a ground connection for those that ground through the frame.
