fender question
« on: January 16, 2014, 11:02:28 AM »
I like the fender on this Thrive brand motorcycle.  Does anyone see any problems or issues that might arise from having this type of fender?

Should be none. Many modern sport bikes use this type and lots of enduros too. It won't eliminate any debris being thrown towards the carbs and interior of your bike though.

I've no idea but I'd hate to hit a pothole and the fender getting caught by the tyre.

With that type of mount, tire contact with the fender would be impossible. The mount iand tire are limited by their respective attachments to the frame (axle, and swing arm respectively). They will only move together, never independently.

The stay looks awfully flimsy to me. The original will have a lot more "meat" holding it in place.

I don't mean to sound rude, but this is untrue and ludicrous. Many Enduro bikes use these fenders currently. IF the tire picked up debris, it would either pass through the fender, sheer off, sheer the fender, and or never make it around the tire far enough to affect the space between them.

To follow your logic, EVERY fender on every bike would potentially run this risk. It just doesn't happen.

You can look at numerous modern bikes, and a huge number of them use this.

Thanks for all the replies!  This is why if love this forum. Overall it sounds like there shouldn't be any issues.  Here's a bit more info though.  I'm adding shorty 11" rear shocks and keeping the stock two spring setup.  I plan on bobbing the stock 750 rear fender and attaching a strut. Thoughts?

The only thing you need to bear in mind is travel distance of the wheel relative to the fender. If they both travel "linked" then you can do anything you want. If the fender is statically mounted, say to the frame, then suspension travel limiting the tire is of concern.

I've just fabbed up a huger fender for my rear that will be mounted to the cross brace of my swing arm (along the pivot). Tire and swing arm move together so no interference possible. See the options?

Pursue any design you see that you like. Just understand the design considerations as you approach them.

And post a pic when you get there!
