barnfind 500 four
« on: January 17, 2014, 02:43:59 PM »
Hello.... new to your site.....I have been given a 500 four with 5580 miles showing that was put away running in 1976. I am digging it out and really do not know what to do with it. I might try to sell it as is, but am considering trying to get it started and cleaned up. Any thoughts? Tips or forums I need to read?

if its been left that long pull the spark plugs and squirt some oil down the cylinders and turn it over slowly with the kicker first if its not locked up,also dump what ever oil is in the sump and replace it with a cheap non friction modified oil,be wise to change the oil filter aswell, why wont someone give me a free 500?post some pictures, youll need five posts i think before you can?

Oil=Transmission fluid - might work even better. Transmission fluid and acetone if they are sticky.

How's the paint on it?  Sounds like a score. I bet it's worth at least hundred bucks.

Welcome to the site, these guys are good for everything.

Happy to say the 500 has come back to life after 38 years of storage! Some carb cleaning and prep and she fired up. So far I am out a battery, hoses and some chemicals. Thanks for all the help and input. I feel blessed that all the electrics have worked and I can start the overall process.......Tim

i hope you keep it and dont just flip it,can you post some pics please?we all love pics here,if you do sell it, please not to someone who wants to "cafe"it or make a rat/bobber/brat,tracker,custom chopper or some other piece of #$%* out of a perfectly engineered bike that is a pleasure to ride, and they run with later model bikes just fine, get them pics up man!
