Valve spring compressor
« on: January 11, 2014, 02:52:17 PM »
Does anyone know if this valve spring compressor will work for our 750s?
I know I could make one but If this will make my life easier Id rather get it.

Thanks!

I ended up using a large c- clamp with a piece of 1"PVC I carved a channel to remove the retainer. Just pad the end of the c-clamp.

Cut a small square window out of a 3/4 inch socket with grinder, and use a c clamp.

Had one and didn't like it. You can't get enough leverage on the clamp to compress the spring and if you try to screw it down, the end that goes on the valve spins. I ended up getting this one http://www.ebay.com/itm/Auto-Motorcycle-Valve-Spring-Compressor-C-Clamp-Service-Kit-ATV-Engine-HeavyDuty-/331038850550?pt=Motors_Automotive_Tools&hash=item4d1373fdf6&vxp=mtr. Add a rubber table leg cap from Home Depot on the valve end. I've used it on several heads and it works great.

Just the opposite for me, I used an automotive type valve spring compressor like the one the OP posted and it worked great when I was installing pretty stiff kibblewhite valve springs on a 750 head. If anything it was a bit overkill but I had no problem compressing the springs once I had the compressor adjusted right. However that style of valve spring compressor wouldn't work on the head of my 550 and in that case I made up a tool similar to what tino describes along with a c-clamp.

Have you tried the deep well socket and hammer trick to remove? Worked pretty damn well for me.http://www.dansmc.com/valve.htm

Of course you'll still need the compressor to get them back on.

I found that one too late to try, but sure sounds easy.

I tried one that you borrow from o'reilly's that's similar to that one and I couldn't get it to hold on the springs. Though that looks better designed.

On a twin I was having a very hard time getting the tool to set properly on the valve head, I have the bike masters $60 one, so I stuck a golf ball in there against the valve head (chamber side) and it made putting the keepers back in a snap.

The tool was awkward to get seated well and I was concerned about scratching
The valve, golf ball helped to keel the centered, and off the valve.

I ended up just using one of those quick grip vice grips and a ground down socket. It was free and pretty easy!
