What broke??? CB400F timing tensioner.
« on: January 04, 2014, 11:19:05 AM »

I am reviving a 75 CB400F that's been off the road for at least 3 years. Got it running and heard a marbly noise in the center of the motors top end with the tank off. I'm assuming something is wrong with the horse shoe style tensioner on this motor. So what is the function of the lower bolt with lock nut that broke on me?

RTFM?
The bolt you are pointing at locks the adjuster. The original idea was to have the bike running or set the crank at a special spot then loosen that bolt. The adjuster would self tighten itself to the correct tension, then you would tighten the lock bolt again.
The open hole above your finger is a place for a plug bolt. The springs that work the self adjuster and the actual adjuster rod are under it but nothing comes out through there.
After a few decades the springs lose tension and to actually adjust the chain you have to take out that upper plug bolt and push the adjuster rod down with a thin screwdriver or something, helping the tired old springs.
The bolt you say is broken is a complicated piece with two different threaded sections - 6mm for the actual screwing into the case and 8mm for the locknut. Usually it breaks because someone overtightened the locknut and the stub below can be removed by sawing a slot in it and using a screwdriver, if it was overtightened into the case that gets a lot less easy.

Ok good to know, thank you. I'll try to get it out of there at some point this week.

Ok it's broken in the case and stuck. I have a nice left hand drill hole going down the center of the stuck piece. This is what came out. How long should this bolt be as I don't want to drill into the tensioner shaft.

As I remember it there is a "Plain" bit on the end so if you get all the thread out you should not touch the plunger

It's not coming out. I'm figuring I'll drill through it and retap the case at this point. If I pull the oil pan I can get the tensioner and tensioner rod/springs out right? Hoping to do this with the engine in the frame.

the broken bit in the crankcase is threaded till the inside of the case and then has a pointed end which locks the tensioner push rod in place. If you go slow and carefully you should be able to drill it out without drilling into the rod. I had the same problem with my 400-4 only I broke an easy-out off in the broken bit in the hole, so I had to remove the engine, dismantle, and take the case out to a place that were able to remove the broken bits with a metal disintergating machine and fit a helicoil. I ordered a new bolt from the local honda store....long time ago now though

I just broke an easy out in my 350f...not looking forward to dealing with that

Unfortunately not, to dismantle those you have to split the cases

That bolt is stubborn. If I give in and pull the motor can I leave the head on? It looks like I can just split the lower crank case to deal with this.

Yes, you can do that, it's quicker & saves the price of a head gasket too.

I actually got through it last night. I have to tap new threads into the lock bolt bore but I added some tension to the tensioner and it sounds a little better. Time to order carb kits and a clutch cable.

Do Not tap bigger, there is not enough meat for 8mm!! Use a 6mm Helicoil kit
