CB650 rocker cover help
« on: January 17, 2014, 09:15:12 AM »
Hi everyone, first post on the site, hopefully I put it in the right spot. I had a question, or rather a cry for help regarding my first attempt at changing a head gasket on a 1979 CB650 that I bought last week.

The GOOD news is, the new gasket is in place and the cylinder head is bolted back on to the correct torque according to the shop manual I have. The problem I'm having though is getting the cylinder head cover on, or rocker cover, I've seen it called both names in different places. At first I couldn't figure out why it didn't seem to fit at all anymore, but then noticed in the manual that I need to back the valve adjustment screws off before putting it back on, and then doing a valve adjustment.

The problem is, I can't get any of the 8 lock nuts on the adjustment screws to budge at all. I'm afraid if I give it any more force I'll wind up bending something or the cover will go flying off the table or some similar wild thing.

Are there any tips or techniques I could use in order to get this done? I just bought the bike last week and am anxious to get to riding it again. Thanks in advance!

I call it the cam cover.  The rocker covers are the 3 parts on last.   The adjuster lock nuts shouldnt be that tight.  Use a good 6 point socket on them.

I ended up getting them loose. And put the whole thing back together, only to discover it's now running super rough and smoking a little, which definitely wasn't happening before. It's been a solid two weeks on this project. I'm cutting my losses and taking it to a motorcycle mechanic in town on Monday I think.

Check out your work first.  What all you do?  Just head gasket?  Double check cam timing.

I think I may have the cam incorrect. Or the valves. I also snapped one of the 8mm bolts trying to torque it down to 9ft/lbs. And stripped a valve adjusting nut.

Lessons learned: Invest in better tools. Don't trust a torque wrench that's taking forever to click.

The item for sale is the 1979 Honda CB 650 - Valve Cover & Rocker Arms. It appears to be in good usable condition, with no cracks or breaks. There is no excessive wear on the rocker arms and rotates as intended. The tachometer drive spins as intended. Please see photos
