Hard side bags on 1975 CB750
« on: November 13, 2012, 07:59:24 AM »
Thinking on how to get my bike ready for a bit of a trip (circumnavigating the US, 2014) and side bags would really help. Either adapting my BMW rack and bags, or fabricating a rack to hold Pelican cases. I have low 4 into 2 exhausts, not the original upswept pipes so there is room for side bags. In either case, pun intended, the rear signal lights are too big and in the way. Will probably incorporate them into the taillight bracket so they are farther back.

Anyone done something like this with sidebags?

FWIW, I seriously considered the pelican case route when planning a long road trip taken a couple of years ago.  In the end, I found that trolling ebay for a set of vintage bags (Bates, Shoei, Vetter) was going to be a heck of a lot cheaper and I wouldn't have to mess with mounting issues.  Found a set of Shoei that came with all mounting brackets, etc.  They just needed a bit of fiberglass work and paint.

I actually have a set of shoei hardbacks that I'll sell. They were big enough for my girlfriend's stuff in one and mine in the other (including sleeping bags). They'll bolt to just about any CB frame and come with a key. No breaks in the plastic/fiberglass although one bolt needs a new rubber washer. Integrated turn signals are included too. They are solid enough to strap more stuff on top using bungee cords.

I'll post a pic later, but I'd recommend finding something similar in size that was bungee mounting points.

Actually, here's a pic of the bags on my 350F when I took that trip.  The pic is kinda corny, but you can see what a loaded 350f looks like for touring purposes.  FYI, the bike was perfect for the trip with two up.

Thanks camelman but you're in San Fran and I'm near Toronto. Shipping would be a b*tch.

Yeah, that'd be expensive. If you go the shoei route, then bear in mind that they had two widths. Probably the case with all the saddlebag manufacturers. The narrow options won't be good for a big trip. The wide ones will be around a foot wide.

I really like my Krauser bags, they hold a full grocery bag and a half each. The racks themselves are solid cast aluminum, with a spot to attach turn signals. They lock both closed and to the bike.... and I got em for $120 bucks on craigslist. Its a little harder to find but they did make universal mounts for other bikes then bmw's.

Plus they look great on the bike, and really fit the lines. The top parallels the seat perfectly and the bottom cuts up slightly.

Anyone with side bags on their bike please post, it would be appreciated. Also any pics of bikes loaded and ready to tour would be fun - especially bikes that belong in this forum.

I just had a memory flash. With my wife, we had Krausers on 750'Honda in Europe. Travelled 20 days - to France and back - and they worked great.

Your subject line says hard bags, but here is another option - Ortlieb dry saddle bags.  I bought mine to use on the KLR, but have yet to use them there.  I used them on my 750F for the 2011 and 2012 relays, combined with an large Ortlieb drybag.  They are tough, absolutely waterproof, and easy to pack on the bike.  There is no other soft side bags that compare to them.  They are reasonably priced and high quality - and light.  They do share the common drawback to soft bags in that they are not very secure, as in they are easy to steal if you leave your bike unattended.  But other than that, I have come to prefer them over the clamshell GIVIs on the CBR or the BMW bags on the GS.  I got them at Aerostich.

Ofreen, hummm, soft bags. Must consider them.

2wheels, I have the same frame and hard bags on my BMW. Looks like it can be adapted to the cb750 no problem. This could be the easiest/best solution.

I have a set of Krauzers rack, like the one in the pic, but no bags. I removed from my K5 have no use for it. If the bags are universal they may fit. If you are interested I can send you a pic of the rack.

Resurrecting this thread. As many have done, want to add hard bags to my 750.
Been following ebay and such.
I'm curious what other bike racks have been adapted to fit on a 750.
Like you've adapted an 89 600 Farglesnort to fit the 750.
Thanks.

My thinking at this point is that a duffle bag sitting on the passenger seat and luggage rack will be enough packing space. I'll have a tank bag, but that will be full of photo gear. It will look like this:

Hey Pecantree, find a picture of Vetter side bags on a CB750. If you like the way they look, send me an email. I have a set I can part with and, best of all, I'm in Pflugerville. You'd have to paint them yourself. Need a fairing?

Isn't this a great forum?
