What do you guys think of the small gouge in the top of the piston, also little dents in the top edge?
should I replace or could I put back in like this?

Yeah, thats fine. Take a small file to any small anomolies carefully to stop it hot spotting. Also, once new rings are installed, check your land clearance. If they are in spec, then you are good for reuse.

if your reusing those pistons run a 1mm drill bit through the oil holes, they will be full of hard sticky crud an air hose alone wont clear them properly!you can just spin it between your thumb and index finger.
