Hi from frozen NH
« on: January 23, 2014, 05:28:40 PM »
Hello to all.  Been lurking around here for a bit.  I've been riding for about ten years off and on.  After a motorcycle accident I took a few years off and then came upon a 78 550 and it was back on.  Rode it for a summer 4 years ago.  Started having charging issues and spent a summer watching it sit in my garage.  The spring after that bought a 919 and currently ride that daily.  (I also belong to wristtwisters forum.)
Well it's cold has hell up here and this is when bike fever sets in.  So when spring comes I'm going to start wrenching on the 550 again and get it up and running good again.  It's a shame to have it just sit there.  Was going to sell it but they aren't real easy to come by around here and I always had a huge grin on my face when I rode it.  I've already read some good threads about the charging system on my bike and printed some info off Oregon-cycleparts.
Anyhow I've rambled long enough.  Thanks for all the good info and I'll throw up some pics of the 550 when it gets a little warmer.

Welcome from Austin.
We had a teeny-tiny ice/slush fall last nite. City has shut down. Temperature back to 70's tomorrow.
Have visited your state, It's beautiful up there.
Stay Warm!

Thanks guys.   It is nice up here in the summer and fall.  Here she is cast out and neglected.  Has a nice 4 into 1 kerker on the other side.  The only thing I've done to it was stainless lines up front and cut up the seat.

BTW I have a buddy who went down there for Moto GP last year.  He said Austin was awesome and if it wasn't so hot he would move there in a heartbeat.  Us northern boys don't handle the heat well.

Small world.  Thanks for the tip.  Still to cold to do anything to it as I need the snow to melt just to get it from the sunroom to the garage.

Well from all the reading and info I need to wrench on her.  Going to push the bike from the sunroom into the house and park it into the boiler room.  I rebuilt my sons 84 z50r in there 3 winters ago.  Not a nice as working in the garage but its a lot warmer this time of year.  Thanks for the welcomes and if it not below zero without the wind chill your not frozen.  I'd kill for 25°.

Welcome from a fellow frozen New Hampshire-er!

With luck that charging issue won't be too much to figure out and you'll be off by spring!

Here is some great link for info to help diagnose your charging issue.
Very good chance it is your voltage regulator or just a bad connection. Stators rarely go bad.

Good replacement parts available here too...

So, the strategy is to lie to people you are asking for help?

I think I'll be busy going for a ride.

Good luck!
