Putting my new front sprocket on. Questions.
« on: January 26, 2014, 02:02:23 PM »
So I'm at the stage of putting my new front sprocket on my '75 750k. I cannot find a diagram to make sure I do it right. I have a new one of those folding washers to use. I know it's a few simple parts but I'd love to find a blow out diagram to make sure I'm correct. The shop manual I downloaded doesn't have one.

Also the chain oiler confuses me. It just dumps engine oil on the chain? When I took this engine off let me tell you there was thick black grease everywhere like an inch thick around the sprocket - you could scoop it out endlessly with your fingers. It's all clean now.

Thanks.

A lot of that build up was hopefully from people oiling the chain regularly for proper maintenance. Can't remember what year ended the auto chain oiler but there are adjustments and threads on here to tell how to plug and eliminate it.
Have you looked at a parts fiche from a dealer website yet to see what order the parts go on ?

Here is a parts diagram for your bike, they can be found at cmsnl.com.

The sprocket is held on with two bolts (#16) and the plate (#10). Slide the sprocket onto the shaft, followed by the plate. The plate won't initially line up with the sprocket bolt holes. It must be rotated slightly after it has been slid onto the shaft far enough, essentially locking the sprocket in place. A small amount of play is normal once the sprocket has been bolted on. It helps to put the bike in gear when tightening the bolts, as this prevents the sprocket from turning as you attempt to do so.

Also, if you are replacing the front sprocket, I would suggest to replace the rear sprocket and the chain as well if they are worn. If one of these items is worn or damaged, it will wear out the other parts prematurely (I learned this lesson the hard/expensive way).

As far as the chain oiler is concerned, yes engine oil is deposited on the chain by means of a hole in the countershaft, and it usually cannot be turned "off" without some modification. I would advise doing this, as it will continue to create a mess until the oiler is disabled. Check out this thread for help with the oiler.

Foldable washer?
Part #11, tabs fold over to prevent the nut from turning.

Pic of my 70KO set up before replacing it with new sprocket. All I did was turn sloted screw in center of shaft clockwise until snug and and tighten down nut and bent down washer taps. And no more messy chain oiler.

Keep in mind the 2 small bolts that hold the front sprocket on should have some blue Locktite on them. They can back out and shear off.
Compare my center bolt to halls...someone replaced mine with a later bolt so there is no oiler on it. That is a good thing.

Thanks. I love how helpful everyone is here.

That folding washer is exactly part #11, yes. And I'm replacing the rear sprocket too, and the chain. I will definitely use loctite on the bolts.

Make sure the blue Locktite...not the red. You should be good to go now. What chain you going with...standard or x-ring. Let us know how you come out.

I got a DID OEM style chain. And my only bottle of loctite is blue. I guess red loctite is permanent?
