1975 CB750F Turbo - will be mine on Monday :) With lots of PICS!
« on: September 06, 2006, 02:36:57 PM »
Here are the pics, sans fairing to get an idea of the condition.  Lots of surface rust on the chrome bits unfortunately, but I think it will clean up quite a bit with some elbow grease.

Check out the electric fuel pump on the right side of the bike, and the boost gauge on the dash - how cool is that!  Also has an electronic ignition on it!

Beautiful paint.  Tank is clean in and out.  Might see if a body shop can remove the Turbo script from the seat without damaging the paint beneath...

Original owner says it's good to 8psi, but nutty beyond that.  The intake manifold has ATP cast into it.

Pics here:

She doesn't know yet... maybe she'll get the hint when I clean out my garage to make room for two bikes and the car :)  The more I look at it, the more I'm keen on bringing it back to life and hearing it spin up the turbo.

I didn't know about the fuel pump and electronic ignition at the time.  Makes me wonder if there's some fancy connecting rods or anything else inside  ;D

Were the fuel pumps part and parcel with a turbo installation?  It's a variable speed pump.  Very interesting.  Apparantly no markings on the carb - will see it in person on Monday.

I'm going to have to make a permanent home in my garage for it - I don't think I'll be able to part with it or part it out.  I'm hoping to use the fairing on my 550, turning it into a CR750 / Ducati 900SS - esque style with a breadbox tank and small solo seat.  I'll make the 750F a naked muscle machine with the turbo.

I think with a lot of polishing and some repainting, the turbo will come back to aesthetic life.  I just love the boost gauge.  So many vintage purpose-built bits.  Depending on the engine, I may try to find a stock silver color engine to replace the black one with, or yank it and repaint it.  I have a stock valve cover that I can polish up, which might look nice with the black.

Then I can either paint the chrome bits on the turbo black if they're too far gone and have the heatsheilds chromed, or polish up the chrome bits and repaint the sheilds black again.

It's coming with a clean set of clubmans too - the controls look like they're not too faded - all in all pretty good from a sun-damage point of view, but obviously stored in wet conditions (look at the centre stand feet!).

That's an excellent pick-up mate, well done! Probably a good idea to take the turbo off and get someone to check it out before you fire it up though, the impeller spins at many times engine speed, so if the bearings are a bit "iffy" after sitting all those years, the last thing you want is for a major blow-up on your first outing! Good looking kit though, much nicer than the supercharger conversion. uuuurrrrggghhhh!)

While you're at it, get the fuel pump checked out, not to mention giving it a full engine service too, before you start polishing chrome. Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

We'll see just how far I take it - will take some time to decide.  You may see a turbo kit on eBay in the future for all I know, along with a very nice matching tank/seat/sidecover set.

My heart is still with my 550F, along with my wallet.  Still waiting on my new pistons/gaskets/guides etc. to complete the top end re-re-build of that one.

On a sidenote, a friend of mine just scored a Yoshimura 590 kit for his 550 along with the new sleeves pressed into the block all bored/honed ready to go for all of $200.  Less than I'm paying to have mine bored / honed.  He's going hog-wild with heavy duty cylinder studs, the Yoshi kit etc. etc.

Well, maybe if I increase the boost to 12, it might skip across the ocean.  At a minimum pieces of it would land in Oz.

What I don't understand is how the fuel pump works - is it just there to make sure the carb bowl stays full while I'm cranking the turbo sucking fuel at a silly rate flying down the highway?  Don't know how it turns on and off etc.  I guess there's not enough flow of fuel without the pump?

The pump was just used the other day to empty old fuel out of the tank, so I know it works.

I suppose the bike wouldn't run properly or at all without the turbo on it, but still somehow using the 4 into 1 manifold and single carb.  I'd imagine the system needs the pressure added by the turbo to distribute mix to the four cylinders.

Well, let's see if I can get the thing breathing fire before you get jealous  ;)  I really just want to hear the thing wind up to whatever ungodly RPM it does, knowing it's only a few inches away from certain vital bits.

Once u get it running make sure to get the loudest blow-off valve you can, and run the shortest downpipe off the turbo as possibile  ;D

Nice addition to your garage.

Would you look at the turbo ID tag and tell us what size it is.  It is located on the intake scroll, should have a series of numbers like

302 BB25  or 370BB40

Thanks, Tom
