Very exiting tear down. Love to find rare parts inside old engines.

About the rocker arms shaft I have a question. Wouldn't the center bolt be enough to secure the shaft ? This will also allow the shaft to turn around giving less friction. I think I had read this in Hondamans book somewhere? Please correct me if I'm wrong .

Jerry, " blue stuff " silicone seal....real popular for a while, then they became 2 cylinder 750's, well some of them, that stuff plugged many an oil orifice/ hole! Hummel, that's correct, early model towers and shafts not drilled. Yes, it is exciting, as you can see this ones been rode hard and put away wet!! ;D Bill Frank, yes should have said pull sump, then turn  engine over, Issac's proud! ;D
On that note, I think the owner thought what goes round....must come out! ::)

Never seen the caps marked this way?

I've got a set marked the same way from a 78' CB750F. I'm guessing these markings would be from near the end of the SOHC production? That would mean they're the newest you can get!  8)

$TROKER SOHC BILL : With that gear right up next to the motor that motor must have been used on a narrow small tire bike ?? Right ?? Your high dollar part sponsor KEN [ CYCLE X ] has a offset gear for a wide tire you will need to get traction and not rub a hole thru the side wall of a tire and inside of frame down tube. On the OLD KZ'S it was rubbing tire and frame for a GOODYEAR or MT SLICK small tire on wide rim. = offset gear , grinding frame tube and re-welding. I would hope the frame was up-graded with better stronger motor mounts so you would not getting twisting of motor in frame on a pass over 142mph in 1320'.  If you ever rode a ZIR factory TURBO 1978 AND SPOOLED IT UP on a freeway and ended up in the next lane because of engine twist and frame shake = you sold that KILLER the next day..... we did !!!!!

Bill, whats the problem with a few broken fins and weld jobs? Lol.We're trying to go fast, not look good. That scoreboard only list W's and L's, it doesn't know how they got up there and in the end, the W's are all that count. This is after all, a sweep the floor bike. I'm going to say right now, this will likely be your most successful build as far as consistency and rounds won go.

Hey, I was just showing you my baby's flaws, I still luv her! It looks pretty good inside. Clean, RC or someone's lightened, balanced and polished crank. Automotive style bolts on steel rods, probably RC H/D ones. Bear, no metal or small animals inside(dogs)! ;D Pistons big, can only see the R, so probably early RC's.Frank, I agree....with your help! ;) 8). And all others who have commented, sent parts etc. Thanks, Bill Going to adjust/tune etc. and run it! ;D

Bill,
I took this one off the wife's bike when we installed the Dyna 4000 SP. It was working fine, just a corner of the mount is broken but there's enough material to use to set it up. I'll get it down to you at some point when you get ready to wire up the bike.

Yes it is Jim. DRL400 to be exact. But if Bill is using that MSD MC1 box, he can buy a 2 step module to plug  into the box to expand it from just being a high side rev limiter to a low side limiter as well.  You will need to use plug in chips or get an rpm selector module to plug into the low side limiter. The adjustable module would be best because you need the capability to adjust the low side limiter for the launch "on the fly" to compensate for track conditions. A clutch bike leaves at a much higher rpm than a slider bike. Sometimes if a track is hooking well, you may need to increase the launch rpm to keep from bogging the motor or to get a better 60's to drop the ET. At the same time, if the track is slippery, you will need to reduce the launch rpm to keep the bike from spinning off the hit. Finding that thin line between bogging the motor and spinning the tire is primarily controlled by the low side rev limiter settings. The clutch set up itself is also a factor in terms of the stiffness of the static springs, air gap and the amount of weight on the arms of the lockup- clutch tuning is critical on a bike with either too much power or one with not enough power.

As Frank said " spinning off the line can be controlled by RPM'S on motor "  but when the LOCKUP comes in [ and stays locked up doing it's job ] spinning, you will continue  to spin more = WHAT do you do ? at the track on that day ? asked George Bryce = add weight to the arms to slow lockup down with just a little slip and NO BOG.... right Frank ???. These are thing you learn with a PRO-STOCK motor and the down load of a race pack and a laptop at a NHRA NATIONAL EVENT. Did you notice that NASCAR is now LAPTOP racing with the GEEK SQUADS from BEST BUY doing the tuning parameters [ a geek word ] , wrench spinner were done = throw that little thumb jet wrench and box of many main jets away it's a finger swipe on a laptop screen now-a-dayz
Bill : On that COBRA MONSTER frame they cut the side top frame tubes and braces and let only a single rail ? With those thin OEM STAMPED motor mounts and a single backbone rail that will be a twisting monster on the bars and in the air = be very careful with that set up that the COBRA might bite you bad.  MSP sold a PRO-MOD COMPLETE 15-18 years ago and the guy made two passes twisting in the air = it still sits in his trucking garage today 5 minutes from my home never back to the track..... after those two passes.
I'll come down to watch you ride the COBRA on the 1320' whole different game than Calendar Girl foot shifting.
