lighting gremlins...weird
« on: January 30, 2014, 06:09:29 PM »
So the RH control and battery were replaced on my 72 CB500 Four.  Starter works fine.  Turn signals work, albeit reaaaaaaly slow, especially the left side.  When I turn on the headlight (high or lo beam) the turn signals will light up, but will not flash.  It seems the draw from the headlight is causing problems for the blinker somehow.

Any ideas?

Some background:  Bike sat for a long time, but the wiring is pretty good visually.  I had almost no spark until I cleaned all the contacts on the coils with sandpaper, reset the points and applied dielectric grease to the wiring connections related to the ignition system.

Thanks.

Is the motor running while you are doing this? If you rev the motor will they begin to flash? Those turn signal relays are really picky about voltage.

I do not have the motor running yet, Jeff.  I'm hoping to start it soon...spark looks OK now, but I think the carbs will be in need of a work over.  Maybe with some luck I can flush the fuel system and get it running this weekend.

Yeah, they usually play up if your battery is less than fully charged and the engine isn't running.
'Then' and 'than' are completely different words and have completely different meanings. Same with 'of' and 'have'. Set and sit. There, their and they're. Draw and drawer. Could care less/couldn't care less. Bought/brought FFS.

Good to know, Lester.  I'll wait till I get the engine running before I worry about the blinkers then.

If weather permits this weekend, I'll flush the tank of the fuel that I'm told contains a heavy dose of seafoam.  Load up a combo of some leaded race fuel I have on hand for my car and pump gas (ethanol unfortunately) and see if I can get the motor going.  I also need to make sure the oil pump is doing its bit.

I love this bike....can't wait to hear her running.
