How much do I have in this thing? OMG!
« on: January 30, 2014, 11:27:42 PM »
I made the mistake today of totaling up all the receipts I have for parts/labor on my K3 Café build. I'll admit I kinda got carried away, what with the 836 kit, porting the head, megacycle cam, etc. However, the number I got after the review stunned me for a moment, I must admit. What with $500 for tools/supplies, I've managed to drop $8500 in this thing, and I'm not done! Excuse me while I freak out! All I can say is, anyone just starting a "café build/restoration", better watch those receipts a little better than I have, apparently. It's amazing how these bikes can suck the wallet dry. Bike looks good tho. What is the average cost, I wonder, to restore/modify a CB750 among other SOHC4 members?

Going cafe will definitely be cheaper than going original. Thats what i'll do on my next one, also do things a bit different as well. Making these things original costs, and suppliers know it. Would have loved to have started off with a good base, meaning having the parts there. But i started off with a real bitsa, hence the cost. In hindsight, i should have turned this into a cafe and kept looking around for something better to begin with. My mistake. She's registered and rides great now though, so i've kinda forgotten about the receipts.

I went from before to after + ~$15K. Take a look at what i started with (first pic), then start costing in NOS of all the missing bits, pipes, seat, fork ears, tank, frame, wiring, rims, spokes, etc, the list goes on. That cost was spead over 5 years or so. I probably won't get that back in a hurry, but thats ok. It'll end up being an heirloom for one my boys in the years to come.

I'm still not finished yet. Still have to get a front gaurd & do something about my alternator cover and some other small stuff. Its only nuts and bolts from now on. Small stuff.

I know, my honda wings are on backwards. I forgot to tell my painter. I'll fix it dont worry.

My next project will be a cafe, so i'll have some fun with it (and at a reduced cost).

My 650 cost me about 6 grand to bring back from the dead.  I only kept the total down by doing some mechanical work for the local bike wrecker, doing everything else myself, except for the paint.  No point doing that when my old man is a qualified spray painter with over 30 years experience ;D.

$1500 to buy

I think at about  $5000 - $6000 on top to get to here. But to be certain I would have to count up the receipts and I have them hidden at the moment

Shipping and handling charges as well as taxes are what kill me. I've tried to consolidate my orders but when you need some small part and Shipping/handling/postal fees sometimes double or triple the cost of the part you order it adds up fast.

Repairs aren't as big a deal as getting an ugly unroadworthy bike pretty and roadworthy....unless you've blown the fark out of your engine of course.

These posts make that brand new 38 year old 400f offered for $14000 sound not so bad.

I never add up my receipts, it's always more than you expect.   As long as you can afford it and it's not your source of income, does it matter?
If you spent all those hours participating in a sport or sitting in a bar, it could be twice that amount.

My daily rider F2 cost me about 1200 to put together, it's a complete mechanical refurbishment, but it's ugly as sin,  and I started with a free frame.  Easy to dump a bundle on one of these, especially once you start doing engine modifications, or have to pay someone to do it.

I spent $1000 on the bike and about $1300 for parts and tools so far and I'm *almost* at the point where I'll be happy with it once it's put together (yes, I kept my receipts and am in full disclosure mode with the wife!). But after reading these posts, I feel bad about not spending enough. Time to order that Acewell speedometer!  ;D

I was fortunate enough to get a nearly complete (but completely neglected from 1981-2012) K2 from the back room of my grandma's house for $500. I save all my receipts and have a bit over $4000 invested. Is it worth it? To me, without a doubt! I have a super dependable bike that looks good and has been in the family for 39 years.

Haven't actually taken a calculator to add it all up but a quick add in my head tells me my restoration was approaching $10k. I originally thought it would cost $5-$6k ....  :o

When you make your original budget it's easy to add up all the major things like engine work and paint and such but it's all the nickel and dime items that will KILL you if you aren't ready for it.

Started with a free bike from my brothers shed. Technically I traded our old lawnmower for it which did run. More than I can say about the bike. Then took it apart, figured out what I needed and hit the swap meets. There were a few things I got on Ebay, but I'm always careful about the costs. Got it on the road for about $800. Tires and battery were the lions share of that, then probably put another $200 into fixing whatever came up. Now I have another $250 worth of seals, gaskets and bits in the garage ready to go.

I did all the work myself. Engine, forks, shocks, swingarm, wheels, mounted the tires, electrics, paint, brakes, made any brackets etc.. It was a ton of work but I had lots of time, all the manuals thanks to this site, and little cash.

But it would sure be happier with new rear shocks, and a swingarm rebuild, and new wheel bearings, and new head bearings, and a fresh ignition. I could easily put another $1000 into it without even thinking about it.

So you have to decide what you want. Do you want a bike that's showroom ready from the 70's, or do you want a bike to ride or something in between. One costs a hell of a lot more than the other.

And how quickly you want it together makes a huge difference in cost.

Its been very reliable, and any problems I've had on the road I've been able to deal with and get myself home.

Old bikes are awesome. Simple to work on. Easy to fix. A pleasure to ride.  ;)
