CB350F rings
« on: February 06, 2014, 05:14:18 PM »
Hi guys

just installing new standard rings onto standard pistons and need a little advice. I will attach some photos. In the packet there is the oil ring then the middle and top compression rings. One of the rings has a shinny edge to it and the other is black. I think the shinny one should be the top ring and this is how they sit in the plastic packet. On the diagram in the manual it shows that the lower of the compression rings has a taper, mine are not...does this matter?

pretty sure I have worked it out now. They should be installed exactly in the same orientation as in the packet. Shiny compression ring on top, next the black compression ring and finally at the bottom of course the oil ring. There is also a very small circular manufacturers mark which can only see when under a good light, this mark should be a the top of the ring. I am not sure if this make a difference and maybe someone can shed light on that. And of course you must have the ring gaps separated. I di the first ring at right angles to the pin and the second one at 120 deg from the first and then the bottom one about 45 from the second...hope that is correct.
Im working from the top end first with the pistons with the conrods attached into the bores and then attaching the the conrods with new bearings to the crank as I have the cases separated...hope I can get the conrod big ends through the case...maybe someone else knows this question too.

Cheers
Chris

From the top down, the ring gaps are supposed to be 120 degrees from each other.
If any top or second rings have any type of mark on one side, that side goes up.

The rings rotate on piston, you can install them 120 apart to feel better, but it will not stay like that.

Rings leak because they are worn out, not because the gaps lined up.

I personally have pulled many, many sets out of many bikes and they do not move around quite as much as you think even after over 85,000 miles.
Just what I have seen many, many times WITH MY OWN TWO EYES. Not what I was "told" by people that haven't actually experienced this.
