Rebuilding Speedo Gearbox CB500
« on: February 01, 2014, 12:15:29 am »
Thought this might help someone as I couldn't find this anywhere.

Unscrew the small Phillips head screw to loose the speedo cable.

Start by removing the seal then cleaning as much grease out as possible. This is absolutely necessary in order to see all the parts.

m

Next remove the circlip on the centre shaft. Next remove the flat washer. Then remove the gear wheel. Under the gear wheel is another flat washer, remove this.

Next look for the tiny grub screw on the opposite end of where the speedo cable is inserted.

I put the cap in a vise and was ble to gently unscrew it and when you've removed the little cap be careful as there is a small washer inside.

[

Remove the drive spindle and you can clean everything and polish the casing.

Regrease the gear and spindle and put it together in the reverse order.

The large oil seal for the inner housing of the speedometer drive is a Metric Oil Shaft Seal 34 x 48 x 07 Double Lip.
It's not listed as a separate part number.
