battery charger
« on: February 01, 2014, 09:36:51 AM »
The 72 CB500 Four is coming along.  Managed to get it started this morning after I got spark to each hole, flushed the tank....only had leaded race fuel around so I used it  ;D  Sounded pretty good but definitely needs a tuneup and perhaps carbs rebuilt.

So I purchased a new Scorpion battery and it seems to be doing OK, but I read that I can't use my car battery charger/tender...I believe Stev-O posted that.  So what charger/tender do you guys recommend?

Thanks.

Sam

I have an Optimate - #4 version I think. It's rescued several batteries that I would have thought were toast. I like that you can leave it charging without having to disconnect the battery from the bike (a special fly lead came with it that you fit to the bike) and it keeps the battery in a fully charged and healthy condition during those long winter weeks/months when you can't get out on the bike.

I bought the Yuasa after another member here recommended it.  I thought it best not to buy the cheapest Chinese charger so my system doesnt fry.
At $30, it's a good product at a fair price.

Thanks, Oldskool.

Stev-o - did I get it right that a car battery charger isn't good.  I've got a smart charger for my car and I've used in on the Scorpion battery.  It charged it but then the light went to read and indicated the battery wasn't good.  I would have thought it could handle the bike battery, but perhaps different.  Thanks.

Motorcycle batteries need to receive a trickle charge at a very low input amperage. Motorcycle-specific chargers ordinarily charge at a rate of around 0.3A. Intelligent chargers mostly maintain a battery's charge with an input around 1A. Car chargers are generally too powerful and can fry your battery.
