Where is the oil filter located?
« on: February 02, 2014, 07:04:56 PM »
What is the oil filter located?  I want to change the oil filter with a new one.  I have already dumped the old oil and left it empty until I figure out how to change the oil filter.

Assuming you have a SOHC 4;  ( FWIW  you should tell us what you have, helps make sure you get good advice.)

It is between the pipes in the front, fined aluminum case, watch the spring & spacer when you take it out.

New filters are available at advanced auto parts.

Be careful reinstalling with the two O-rings in the correct location. Do not over tighten, Just snug + a little, maybe 1/8 turn or so.

Welcome to the forum. You came to the right place. Be very gentle on that oil filter bolt. They round easy from "previous owners" tightening them up way to much. Let us know how you come out.

Nice picture showing where the filter is located...but I think it shows it mounted upside-down. :o

From the shop manuals and various pictures and illustrations, the side with the shorter fins goes "up".  In the photo shown previously, it appears that they are on the lower side.

This is a copy from the Honda Shop Manual.

Well, I would say that the service manual is communicating how the filter/parts go together, not how the filter case is assembled to the engine case.

The CB750A service manual shows is oriented correctly (i.e., up is up).

The oil filter case has a "tab" that fits into a cavity in the engine case.

The other thing that you may not know is that the 76-78 oil filter case is unique (by Honda part number) to these few years.  Maybe you're looking at older oil filter cases?

I've always mounted "long fins" up so the tab would engage the slot in the case to prevent the housing from spinning....

Chucktrumpet has not come back to acknowledge or even Identify what bike we are talking about...so all we can assume it is well drained.  But no way to tell him realy what to do is there?

Do we want to enter into a debate about how & when to properly drop the oil pan?

Do we want to get him involved in selecting a good oil?  :) :)

Sounded to me like the guy was trying to develop the skills necessary to take care of his bike,  I thought it would be good just to give him a hint or two.  Never thought it would drop into the usual debate.

Perhaps I should have admonished him on search functions and punctuation.... ::)

Point well taken.

Usually (as a moderator), I let the threads go for a while . . . and then I'll trim it up later - so that it will remain a "useful" thread.  There's a lot of off topic content in this particular thread.

Interesting...perhaps I was only relating to my model, which is the CB350-F.  On it there is no centre tab on the housing and the motor has no "cavity" as you show.  It does have a tab on the upper right side of the motor (facing forwards as when riding) that fits in-between the two shorter fins on the filter housing, to keep it from spinning.  Although it could be mounted the other way round, I'm not sure if the tab would engage properly.  I've always mounted the short fins up.  Maybe other models of the SOHC-4 are different.

On the Baby Fours (350F/400F) the cam chain adjuster bolt is in the middle of the engine, just above the oil filter's housing. If the 750-type filter housing is used on these bikes, it must be turned upside-down, relative to the 750 (et al) or the longer top fins hit the bolt.

In the 1972 350F, when they first came out (if anyone has the old Cycle mag with the 350F on the cover, I think this special housing was visible), there were filter housings with notches cut in the center 2 fins of the housings, to clear the bolt. Someone at Honda obviously thought this too expensive, and the 750-style housing came out on the bikes soon after, turned upside-down to clear the bolt.
 ;)

The biggest reason this "sticks in my memory" was because the notches looked really goofy to my jaded 750-loving eyes at the time. They looked like they were broken or something? It was sort of a relief to me when they "fixed" it, but I didn't realize for a long time that it was just the 750 filter housing: I had a shop underling who did most of the oil changes for me by then, snob shop foreman that I was.  ;D
