New rim time?
« on: January 24, 2014, 04:46:29 PM »
Howdy,
Got early off work today and started working on my time to hopefully get the tires fixed and ready to go ASAP. I wanted to run it by some of you guys how the rim looks and weather it would be worth attempting to derust/powder coat them, or just get new ones all together.

The front is almost the same. The hub looks fine.
Unless someone has black rims for a 500 they wanna get off their hands  ::)
Thanks for the help!

Had the same thing after my bike sat for 25 years. I wasn't planning on coating them so I got a new front rim and used my original rear which had been swapped out for a 16" (mistake) in the 70's. Never relaced wheels before but it's really not that hard. Just takes time and patience. One thing I do to preserve the wheels is wire-brush the insides and paint them with primer. Most recently, my neighbor painted them with 2-part epoxy automotive primer. That should keep rust away for a while. In the old days I just used spray primer and re-wire brushed and painted as necessary at tire changes.

To answer your question, I'd put on new rims.

I would derust with a brush and paint with something. I used Smoothrite on mine.

I believe you have a similar product across the pond.

19- 1.85" front
18 - 1.85" rear

but theres one issue, that is that the older wheels that i have are
19-2.75" front
18 - 2.75" rear

what gives? am i measuring from the wrong spot?
oh good god tires and spokes are going to kill me.

Are you measuring at the bead or the out side edge. BIG difference.

You can save those rims if the chrome on top is decent. The rims off of my K1 were much worse than yours.

Go to the hardware store, buy some phosphoric acid from the paint section and a pint or quart of rustoleum primer. Pick up some cheap dollar brushes and rubber gloves. Next go to the dollar store and get a plastic tray, something at least 2"-3" inches deep. The deeper the better. You shouldn't have to spend much more than $30

You want about a 60/40 mix of acid and water in the tray. Dip your rim in there and just let a section sit for several hours, rotating it just enough to get the next section wet. The longer the better if you have the time. Eventually the rust will start dissolving. As you start seeing less and less rust take your wire brush and start brushing the rest of the rust off while it's wet. Once all the rust is gone brush on the rustoleum.

This will take some time, probably days but it works and it's a lot less hassle the sandblasting, grinding etc. I have been de-rusting parts like this for years. Right now I have some badly rusted pipes soaking in a small 10 ga. trash can. This photo shows the difference after soaking half the pipe for 1 day. This will not harm the chrome in any way and as a bonus if you have rust on the tops it will eat that up also.

Hope this helps

Getting a rim (without spokes) blasted and powder coated should cost less than $75. Maybe around $125 if you have them do the entire wheel (hub, spokes and rim). If that is your plan, don't waste your time with the rust removal since the blasting will take care of that and the pc will cover the inside as well as out, so no need for primers, etc.

The question is, how much metal has been eaten away by the rust. Can't tell from the pics. If the spoke holes are solid and you still have some meat on the rim where the worst rust spots were, then you should be fine. If the outside of the rims are pitted, the pc surface won't be perfect but I've had some pretty bad rims powder coated and they came out looking good to me.

I did rebuild both wheels and replaced all of the spokes so yes, I stripped them down first. Just to clarify, do not lay the rims down, put them in the upright position

Or... Just go to the Z1 site and order 2 new DID rims for less than $200 and 2 sets of spokes for less then $100. The spokes they sell are made in Japan and are great quality. Have used them on several bikes

doh! i wish i came back to this thread before i ordered new rims.  :( i still need to get spokes, was thinking of going with buchanan's but for some reason they only have 750's? nothing for 500?
The rim is two different widths?!

whats going on here? the bottom one is the rear
for the new rims i got the DID ones with 19 for front. 18 for rear. just waiting on the rear one to come in.
Ill try to finish refurbing the hubs this weekend
anyone know which spokes from buchanan to order? also thinking about new bearings for the tires... any recommendations?

thanks y'all. almost done with the bike hopefully by end of march.

Sure they do, look here...

http://www.buchananspokes.net/products/spoke_kits_honda_cb.asp

I would call them to confirm you are ordering the correct spokes.  I just received a set for a wheel I am rebuilding on my K4.

Sand blast the rim and get it powder coated, then get new stainless spokes.
Or just send your hub to Buchanans.
