All Balls Racing taper steering bearing set
« on: February 06, 2014, 06:14:30 pm »
So I received some good advice to replace the steering bearings along with the wheel bearings.  The All Balls set arrived today.  Instructions speak to measuring the stock lower bearing stack to determine if one of the two washers are needed to get back to the proper height...OK.  So anyone need the washer and if so where did you install it?  Just want to be sure I don't FUBAR this.

Now on the back of the small sheet that are instructions is a diagram about modifying the spanner nut to the specified dimensions.  It's hard to read, but it looks like the groove in the spanner nut is to be reduced by 0.039" and the ears on the nut are to be flattened (reduced in height) by 0.012"???  Seriously???

Help would be appreciated.  I figured this set would be plug and play and not require modification.

Thanks.

Sam

on my 750, I used the thinner dia. washer, then the thick dust seal, then the bearing.

This thread has it all.

Thanks, Flybox!  I managed to find this thread late last night and got through over half of it.

Just so I understand, and I'm assuming we're talking about the lower section (bottom of frame neck), you put the spacer first, then the dust shield and then the bearing which would fit up into the new race.  Is this right?

One thing that threw me off one of the posters (I think his handle is Hush out of New Zealand) is that he indicated he put the spacer ABOVE the race in the lower part of the neck....that threw me off???

Correct!
be sure to pack the bearings really well with grease....like this

Thanks again, Flybox!   I thought I was losing my mind when I read that that the spacer went between the bottom race and the neck of the frame...

That vid is really good stuff.  Amazing how much grease that bearing accepted.

WINNING info!

you can do either.  they yield the same result.
ishtty sketch for the lower stem bearing. Choose one or the other.
(A) "between the race and the neck"
 - OR -
(B) "under the dust seal"

I see.  So where the race sits in the neck...it is as flat as the washer.  Got it.  I'm a rookie.  I'll learn once I tear into it.  Hopefully this weekend if the weather allows.

Thanks again, Flybox....excellent info!
