Removing Rear Sprocket Carrier From Hub
« on: February 03, 2014, 12:59:37 PM »
Ok, I've removed the sprocket carriers from the cush drive rubbers in the rear hub at least 1,000 times on 100 bikes.  Last night, went to start dissasembly of the rear wheel on my 1971 CB500 project, and the carrier would not come out.  Squirted WD40 in there as best I could, tried heating the hub gently, tried hitting the sprocket from the opposite side to drive it out, tried hitting the inside of the carrier from the other side through the 4 openings... the evil thing did finally loosen just a bit but it still will not come out.  What am I missing?

Thanks.  I don't see how the studs condition, assuming you're talking about the ones that the sprocket is bolted to and go into the carrier, have anything to do with the carrier not coming out of the wheel hub.  I'm not trying to take the sprocket off.  I suspect the old cush drive rubbers are just 40 years now in there and have decomposed and stuck to everything... anyone else have this problem?

I don't want to just keep hitting it with a bigger hammer, but sometimes that's the right answer!

The left hand threaded who what?  Does this thing connect the sprocket carrier to the hub?  I'll have a look this weekend... that would be something totally new to me.

Thanks Dave500, I'll have a look.  Yes, probably that many carriers/hubs pulled apart, but never a 70's Honda, and have never seen anything holding the carrier in the hub except that the entire wheel assembly is held between the swingarm...

Is there anything more fun than riding? They are between your legs and are quiet when you turn them off.
