Installed spring height
« on: February 07, 2014, 03:38:30 PM »
I got inner valve springs installed and purchased a tool to measure the height.

The problem is, there is no reliable way to measure it. Not within 0.01 mm the specs call for. First of all, the tool is not exactly paralel to the valve stem, second - the screw on the compass is not precise enough to feel the touch, third the installed height is different on each side of the spring.

That said - and experienced - as far as I can tell the springs are right on the upper limit of installed height.  I would rather think it is better to keep them looser/longer since I am not building a racing engine and longetivity is my primary goal.

Or is there a trick I failed to discover?

Please, advise.

I've never heard of measuring installed spring height, just to measure them in the free state, un-installed.

What springs? Just use calipers with the depth gauge off the retainer (minus the base)....you'll get within .005 or so easy after subtracting for the base and retainer thickness. And right...set them on the low side.

CycleX set for F2. The retainer is domed, it was throwing me off. Here are few  pictures of my method.

Thank you, MRieck, will use no shims than.

Yes, what Cyclex lists for F2 and calls high flow.
