Now that I finally got the carbs all cleaned up but lacking the proper float setting gage ( nearest dealer 60 miles ) can anyone suggest an alternative method ?

Vernier caliper or cut one out of thick cardboard
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

Ah, alternative tool not height. Had a dense moment. I found a small steel rule (six inches) at the hardware store that had a sliding "T" on it and measured inches and millimeters. I think it was $2-$3. The "T" only extended far enough to do one float side at a time, but just checked the other each time and they should be the same unless something is bent.

Is it possible to check float height while the carbs are still on the bike? How hard is this compared to pulling the carbs off and reconnecting all the calbes and such?

...i'm not a big fan of doing in carb work w/the carbs on the bike.  some talk about changing jets and what not with the carbs sitll on, but i always remove the carbs.  but to answer your question, i think it would be possible as you can drop the bowls with the carbs on the bike.  you just need to hold the float up so it just touches the float pin to measure...
