350F engine case studs
« on: February 07, 2014, 04:00:51 PM »
I have fitted new ones and wonder if they should be torqued down. I have torqued them all evenly to 6.5 Ft-lb
Also I was about to fit the cylinder gasket and out of the unopened package (for 40 odd years) I noticed a small amount of damage....what is everyone's expert opinion. I was also going to use copper spray.
Also on the left of the gasket there is a hole for the oil and on the right there is not, do I have the gasket the wrong way, does it matter even or should there be another hole on the side that is missing?

Thanks to everyone that has chipped in so far with help in putting this motor back together

cheers
Chris

That damage doesn't look too bad, if you apply some gasket goop over it it should be good.  I'd consider punching or cutting some holes to match the block in the gasket so that the oil flows can function.

That little fold in the gasket should be fine as long as it doesn't break off. Re the oil holes, match up the gasket with your old one or the digipix you took as you took the engine apart. (You DID take pix along the way and follow the "don't throw anything away until the new one's been working great for 2 weeks" rule didn't you? You DIDN'T throw out the old gasket already, right? RIGHT?!? ;)

oh yes lots of pics of 3 of these motors I have dismantled. From memory most of these gaskets were so well attached that they had to be scraped off so there was not much left, but yes I will look through my archive of pics.

I have found a picture of one of the motors I took apart with the base gasket still attached. It shows the hole in the gasket on the LH side of the motor or cyl 1 at the front. There is damage on the gasket on the other side but I am pretty sure there is no hole on that side. Picture attached

Does anyone know if the cylinder studs should be torqued down?
