1977 CB550F Cam Shaft and Sprocket Removal - Success!!!!!
« on: February 09, 2014, 07:03:48 AM »
Hi Guys,

I did some searching, but I cannot find any answers.

I am attempting to remove the Cam Shaft from the Engine.  I would like not to break the chain if possible.  Here is where I am:

1.  Both bolts are out of the Sprocket

2.  The Tensioner is as loose as it can get (I checked the tension as I moved the adjuster clockwise and where it stopped the chain has as much free play as it gets)

3.  I am able to lift the shaft on the right side, but I cannot get it to clear the engine case.

4.  I am able to spin the engine and was able to check the Sprocket in different positions to see if I could get some more clearance, but no go....

Here are some pics of where I am now:

As always, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Gersh

Remove the chain from the sprocket first. There will be enough free play in the chain for this.
'Then' and 'than' are completely different words and have completely different meanings. Same with 'of' and 'have'. Set and sit. There, their and they're. Draw and drawer. Could care less/couldn't care less. Bought/brought FFS.

Lester,

I forgot to mention that I also do not have enough clearance to.remove the chain off the sprocket.  Nor can I get it to disengage from the crank....

Thanks,

Put a screwdriver or something down the rear of the chain tunnel and push the tensioner in.
The shaft should move to the right just enough for the sprocket to come off its seating anyhoo.

1MM Times THANK YOU!!!!!!  So easy and worked a charm.  Do they mention this in the Honda Manual?  Clymer, as always, leaves a lot to be desired!

I never seen it mentioned but I don't have a Honda manual. It just seemed like something I should try. Its also useful when replacing the cam.

My $200 cb500 has one of them - it converted itself into one - I found all the little pieces of what used to be black plastic guide in the sump!

I removed mine as well. Specially lightened for racing.  :P I guess it's to cut down on noise originally?
