Splitting the cases
« on: February 09, 2014, 10:22:48 am »
1970 CB750 K0. Oil is now coming out of the points-side crank seal at a pretty good clip. I'm hoping I can split the cases and replace that seal without taking the top-end apart. Tell me this is so.....please.

Yes it is so, from first hand experience. Take the motor out. Remove all side covers, and top side crankcase bolts. Flip it over, remove all bottom side case bolts. Remove bottom case (gotta fiddle with the shifter and transmission bearing holder, no big deal).

Fix seal.

Reverse.

The two case halves have to be re-sealed. What's the best stuff to use that won't gum up the oil channels?

Really take good notes and pictures when taking the shifting mechanism apart with the springs and roller arms etc. That was a real head scratcher for me the first time before the internet was around   ;)

Terry, I recently used Threebond (1184) between my cases.  Put it on real thin with a paintbrush or toothpick.
~10 min working time before it starts to set up.  Let me know if you need an extra set of hands....

Thanks mate. I might do that. I have so many things need doing that I don't know when I'll get to it but I like to have all my ducks lined up before I go on a project. So I'm getting all the info together. Did you replace that points seal on your scooter?

Never heard of "paint brush thin" but 3 motors with a bead around one side of the mating surface works good for me

Yes Terry, I did.  It's easy.  It has a lip on one side, so it will only fit one way.

Skidoo...probably ended up with the same amount as I did the thin coat on both sides.  Me and my wife each painted one half. Just wanted to ensure good coverage and no oozing ;D
