Going to Hawaii in April for a vacation with my goddess,

, who tolerates my motorcycle antics. She dropped my jaw tonite when she suggested looking into renting a bike while we're there!

So anyone have any experience or recommendations?

There is a Harley shop near the end of Waikiki Beach. It's not a full fledged bike shop but a souvenir shop. They'll have a bike sent there for you. A one day rental there is MUCH cheaper than back here in the states.

Thanks Jerry, but I'm going to the big island ( Waikiki is on Maui?) Seems like there are two company's there with a variety of makes, still researching.

I am going to the big island next week to visit my older brother. He bought a house near Pahoa (South of Hilo) a couple years ago to semi-retire. I am going over with my other two brothers, so renting a bike won't be on my agenda. I know my brother sold his Valkyrie before he left California, said there was no way he would drive a motorcycle on the island.

Last time I was there I saw what he was talking about, some of the locals come up to the highway from a side road and pull onto the highway without looking or slowing down. The Hilo side of the island where my brother lives gets a lot of rain, the Kona side is dryer and would be better for riding a bike.

The big island would be a beautiful place to ride, be careful if you do.

Last September my brother-in-law and our wives rented Harleys (sorry) on Maui. It cost around $200 for the day. Actually more than a day. We picked them up in the morning when they opened and had to have them back by noon the next day. My point is it was plenty cheap. I'd guess it's the same on all the islands. Got it plenty of riding. It was great.

Thanks for all the tips guys. We also decided we will spend a day or two on Oahu as well (Honolulu). Found a place online called Chase & they have a Shadow or a Bonneville for a not bad price. Is driving on that lower part of the island nutty too? Heard Honolulu traffic is no picnic, but I'm from an urban area with 6 million people...so how bad can it really be?

I didn't get in rush hour while on Oahu but went through the city. Wasn't bad but I hear rush hour is a #$%*!

I'm thinking the Harley is less than $200. Actually $139 + fees

Hey Brooze - I spent a week on Oahu, rented a Honda and cruised around the island twice. It was a trip I will never forget.

Get out of Honolulu asap but it's good for a base. I don't recall where I rented from but check out The Big Kahuna, he's got whatever you'd like.....

Rented a Road King from these guys in Denver two years ago. Might be worth a try - we had a good experience with that company.

So I'm leaving in a week, it's down to a Shadow 600, Boulevard 800 or a Roadstar 1700, all the same price. All have bags, sheilds & backrests. Which would be more comfortable for the "Goddess"? and would any be too low seating for my 6'2"? Or too heavy? Any experience/comments?

That Roadstar looks pretty nice. Dont think the 600 would have enough power for two up.

There's a couple different sohc4 members there,one is 'Dimitri';he's building a CB550 w/ a Nice orange powdercoated frame on here.
He should know.

get the bigger bikes, my dad has a boulevard 800 and it does have some power. My wife and I honeymooned on Oahu and stayed in Ko'olina. We rented a car and drove around the entire island in a day. Definitely go to north shore and then check out the buddhist temple on the other side.

Of the bikes you've listed, I'd get the Roadstar. The Roadstar is a nice bike. I had one before I got the Goldwing in 2003, and it was great for all types of travel. Only reason I changed was that as a cruiser, it isn't really very comfortable after a couple of hours, especially for the missus. With the Goldwing, we can ride all day long.

April 24

As the modified title says, I did it and had a very nice ride on the big island of Hawaii. Picked up the bike at Wailua on the west coast, the guy at Big Island Mototrcycle was very helpful, thanks dude! We headed up the west then north coast on 19 and 270 all the way to the end of the road at Polulu Valley. Many scenic stops at beaches, parks & lookouts. Headed south next on the Kohala Mtn Rd, some spots up around 4500' I think, much cooler & windy. Glad I had a jacket, thought we were riding through a rain shower at one point, but it was just a cloud on the road. Damn windscreen acted like a sail, had to keep the bike heeled over about 15 degrees into the wind, wife didn't like that part.

Stopped in Waimea to warm up at a Starbucks, and right away a guy walks up & we start talking bikes, guess it's the same everywhere in the world in our sport

Back down the Mamalahoa Hwy, covered about 150 miles, think it was my wife's longest bike trip ever. Woohoo!

PS Do we look like cruiser people?? Haha, NOT!

Thanks guys, Hawaii is quite the state, I will not forget that trip for sure. Steve-o, the bike was generally fine. When we got to the shop I told my wife to sit on all of them & pick the one that was comfortable. The big island has low traffic & easy curves, so getting used to my first cruiser was't too bad, even got sorta comfortable with boards & the heel/toe shifter! ( but won't be buying one any time soon, although I did buy a CB650C this year, haha)

Looks good Bruce! You must have had a wonderful time. Did it take you a while to get used to the forward position of the foot controls? Every time I get on a cruiser, my feet at first are too far back LOL.
